Another problem that's extremely apparent in XVI for example can also be found to some degree in XIV: in the former, NPCs tend to exclusively talk to the main character at all times, even if there is multiple of them standing around. This is a real issue with a lot of RPG games, and it makes the story and the direct environmental pieces much more shallow as a result. To make sure that the player gets the full spotlight all the time, NPCs can only interact with the MC unless absolutely required otherwise. You end up with little to zero character interaction and growth outside of what the MC does and sees, and it naturally results in everything being about the MC and nobody else. XVI is extremely guilty of this with NPC companions that almost seem like constantly pandering around the MC with not much else.
In comparison XIV has a similar issue where most NPCs constantly talk to the air. They're not even looking at each other, they say their piece in the air, then the camera moves to the next one, like in a recital. They rarely actually address each other, and at most they'll do the infamous Nod Of Acknowledgement. Always laser focused on the issue at hand, they never take time to behave like actual humans would (like in older FF titles), and they do not talk to each other much at all. Even to the WoL, it's uncommon as well. On top of the verbosity and lack of conciseness that sounds like an old book, this also makes the whole piece incredibly stiff (like at the theater).

If you read the interviews with Yoshi-P carefully then you will notice, that he seems to be somehow obsessed with movie streaming services like Netflix. He often states, that the players do not have time today because there are the streaming services.
Maybe the FF14 devs try to make the game more similar to these services. But if so, i do not think, that it will work.
Cheers

When you start to realize that since ARR the drawn out dialog is a feature and not a bug, the answer for all of this starts to become more clear in a domino effect kind of way. Lets say they got competent writers, and they cleaned up the drawn out padding dialog in the next expansion. If all else stays the same, it would become blatantly obvious just how little was actually put in at launch. Like its something that people haven't complained about enough because there are other glaring problems, however all of that dialog is simply padding to make MSQ and Side Quests longer so it seems like they actually produced more, when in reality they didn't. I mean these days, I wouldn't be surprised if it was prompt engineered with Chat GPT after the script was written lol. And like I say that jokingly but the level of effort needed for stuff like that is going down significantly so I also want to emphasize the waste of time and "cost" there.

But they can't be HER socks! She doesn't wear any!Wuk Lamat: "Hmm, I need milk for my cereal."
Erenville: "In this place, one can find such things in the fridge-known around these parts as the refrigerator."
Wuk Lamat approaches the fridge.
Wuk Lamat: "But what purpose could such an object serve?"
Alisaie: "There's only one way to find out."
Wuk Lamat opens the fridge.
Krile: "Twelve preserve! Milk! My grandfather must have known about this. The more we see, the more the puzzle of his visit to the store falls into place."
Wuk Lamat: "Milk? Surely there must be some use for this."
Alphinaud: "It seems one might add it to one's cereal to aid in its aetherical conductivity. Such a combination would improve both the taste and texture without doubt... but one must be careful, for surely it poses the risk of turning the cereal into naught but a soggy mess."
Wuk Lamat pours the milk on her cereal and begins eating it.
Wuk Lamat, with her mouth full: "Such a boon our companionship has been! Truly it is the spirit of unity that makes such things possible!"
Wuk Lamat asks you to go find three lost socks in her apartment, except two of the ones you can interact with are the wrong color.

Well, it's been over a decade of this now, sooo...

SE really seems to be in need of an editor in their writing department these days. I'll never forget there was a scene where the scions show up late in the DT story, and we had to be like "oh let us catch you up on what happened," and instead of fading to black and doing that off camera, I sat there for what must have been 20 minutes as the characters actually explained all the events that had happened and I was like, you have got to be kidding me, why am I here for this?
I'd also like to shout out all the times my character had a flashback to something someone said not even 5 minutes ago, cause SE apparently thinks players have the memory of a goldfish (Though they might not be too off the mark on that one tbf)

I'm someone who likes storylines and cinematics, but even I think ,they're overdoing it. Sometimes i feel like facepalming when i'm loaded in yet another pointless cinematic . And its funny bc from what i understand these cinematics cost quite a bit...
Yeah, that’s always bothered me in FFXIV. I don’t like how the dialogues are written.
Why can’t anyone just talk like a normal human instead of filling the whole chat window every time they speak?
Another problem is the language. If you’re not German or French, English is your only option, but they use these really old, archaic words, and with the walls of text it can be sometimes unreadable for non-native English speakers.
I just wish the game had dialogues and cutscenes that felt normal, more like in other FF games.
