Confirmed for Brawl.
While I do like the idea of some guidance on where to go and what to do next especially for a new player I dislike the 'follow the path of !'. And yes, we aren't even sure that is what we are getting I am concerned about it. I've played many other MMO that is just follow quest chain after quest chain. Usually you end up doing them solo and even if you want to team up you can't because your partner might not be on the same quest chain as you.
But all that aside, I believe the OP is really looking for options. I am also hoping there is the ability to not just follow the ! and there is a way to just grab your friends and explore the (open)world and if you want to camp and grind mobs you can.
The whole 'as you zone in you will be presented with a list of things to do' worries me a bit and I hope there are things to do that you aren't actually lead to. I don't mind it be there for newer players or something but I hope there will still be some mystery when I enter a new zone.
However, we don't actually know how it is going to work so I'm trying to be open minded about it. I'm hoping there is some balance between hand holding and no guidance at all.
The main purpose of the 'rails' was to make things feel more familiar. like has been said repeatedly, they want to bring FFXIV to the mmo standard.
so essentially i'm expecting a 'me too' game. right now, all we know that will really separate it from the pack is that it is final fantasy.
the fact that the game failed and is being relaunched is generating quite a bit of hype. I hear more about the game now than I ever did when it first launched. but, the downside is it's a relaunch instead of an expansion. either way, we can all expect a big influx in the player base while people try out the changes.
there are a lot of MMOs on the market. many of them follow the rails strategy. while it is not my preferred method, I'll have several 50s already. so i'm not too worried about it. most MMOs are also a race to end-game. as that is where most of the fun stuff happens. so again, the rails concept is more the journey to endgame.
and really, a lot of new players ask 'i'm level 15. what do i do now?' and because they are not familiar with this type of game they are lost. rails provide some structure.
If it were up to me, i would do rail quests up to level 30ish or solo. and then force the player into party content/grind parties and have the game be 'open world' after that point. and have a couple story/quest arcs for jobs/classes and of course the overall global story arcs.
What i am concerned about is the endgame content. we all know that the materia system is being revamped. as long as we dont' have some silly wow-like reputation system we have to worry about grinding daily quests to get points so we can get materia, i'll be...content. Grinding things like Caravan and Hamlet I find tolerable. but if i have to do leve-like content every day i think i'll puke.
For the most part i'll be reserving any judgement until i see the actual execution.

I'd prefer !s over having to use ffxiclopedia to figure out how to finish a quest. The less I have to alt-tab to look something up, the better.
Give me 1 reason I should trust Yoshi. Now players have been complaining about drop rates and they are terribly low, yet they refuse to put longer lockout times better drop rates, I could go on and on. Also the primal and boss battles are scripted. Seriously make all these primals and boss fights unscripted and spontaneous, add longer lock out timers. Meaning they can do any of there moves at anytime, they react based on what the party dose, now theres a challenge. The only challenge in FFXIV is learning how these scripted fights play out and thats not hard to do. I have heard of how horrible the game was, well so he added this he added that but in the end the direction this game is taking isnt the right direction. Now Rokien can say what he wants I dont belive him what I will believe is when I see otherwise at 2.0. Lets not forget this is SE we are talking about so putting your trust in Yoshi isnt the best idea as he works for Square Enix.I'm just saying its beyond stupid to trust Rokien over Yoshi.
And clearly you never heard about the disaster this game was in upon release, because it has improved tremendously since then. If that doesn't earn trust or respect idk what does. Yet someone as challenged and clueless as Rokien somehow earns your trust and respect? Please do explain this to me; actually, I take that back. You should probably keep it to yourself.
You could just quit, since you're so unhappy here.Give me 1 reason I should trust Yoshi. Also, your avatar looks suspiciously like Rokien...

Way to misquote. Yoshi was talking about adjusting the graphics settings.
I like camping mobs. I like having my camp stolen. I like having to get a party to go grind and there already be a party there at the camp I just spent time and effort to get a party for... and then we fight over the camp... and then we hate each other.
It's awesome.
I can't believe they're ruining the game again.
I don't want to get on a train, then get off it and be level 50.
That's silly and ruins my immersion!
That's what you do now. Get on the Natalan Wolf Train, Get off at 50. And you don't even want to do quests. What immersion are you talking about? Pfft.
