I think there is nothing wrong with this style if it is dynamic, vivid and has got a thrilling and deep storyline. You would make the story not entire linear but more like a tree: Having one linear line with many side branches maybe.
So it will feel less static and more like an open world. But to me it sounded as if this is where Yoshi is heading (please correct me if I'm wrong).

But really, I prefer playing content and story over grinding that's not connected to content. I mean, I don't want to start playing the actual game when I have reached the level cap...
I want to dive into the game from the start.

The only alternative I could imagine would be to mix grinding/unrelated quests and quest chains. :x
