You do have a choice. You can do quests, missions, leves, grind, dungeons, etc all to level your character. So what if quests are going to be what gives the most exp? It beats killing wolves for 5 hours.

Exactly, I don't mind Grinding, but I rather Quest and have the feel of Adventure, then killing the same thing for 5 hours and feel like a jerk for killing a bunny XD. hehe

You mean it's not on rails now? Currently people grind/leve combat jobs to 35ish, then do Raptor parties > Natalan Spirit bond parties. There isn't a lot of pathfinding and exploration going on anyway... once people find a workable solution to a problem (ie finding the fastest way to level), every bloody person follows the template. So yes, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that FFXIV players are just like the majority of most MMO players in that you don't really give a damn about the lower levels, and your biggest goal is to rush to end game.

Now if you're looking to take it slow, you can definitely still grind on mobs. It just won't be at the fastest speed possible. The days of standing in a corner in Valkrum and killing crabs for 200 exp a pop are over. If you want that group feeling, we'll actually have lowbie dungeons where you'll have to do MORE than just stand in the same grid square killing everything that spawns. Right now, we really only have Toto-Rak, which largely goes unused for leveling (instead it's a 2 man seal farming location)

In addition, I know people who have several lv50 classes/jobs and they still have yet to complete their main/GC storylines. Why not give players their storyline (in brief chunks) along the way to 50? One other note, I truly doubt they'll add enough quests to take every combat job up to 50 by questing alone. So that's where you fill the gap with dungeons, leves, and yes, mob grinding exp (although that will be the least attractive option).

I know some people have this amazing aversion to anything WoW does, but it does get silly. I wonder if some people have the idea that ffxiv is a sandbox MMO (which it definitely isn't, but will be getting sand box elements come player housing etc). It's a theme park, no matter how you dice it. That's not saying it's bad to have a theme park MMO, especially if it's well done.

"Jobs to progress by clearing quests rather than gaining EXP" -Taken Directly from the SE system and content list planned for 2.0

I really, really hope they change their minds about that part for 2.0. That will definitely completely destroy the normal exp camping route. I don't care about quest arrows and what not, but this easily ruins any choices of progression we had before.

You are misreading the quote and not understanding how Jobs work, Jobs are not your class. Therefore, when you xp grind on quests, mobs, leves, or dungeons your class gets the XP and the Job doesn't. Your Job is the same level as the class it is equiped to. The quests used to level up said job is to get Job related abilities and gear. You don't level a job seperate from your class. They are a specialization of your class not seperate. I hope this clarifies your misunderstanding if not... just eat up anything Rokien says and thinks those kind of quotes have anything to do what we or he says.

Hmm. I like your explanation, as we already have those Job quests, so this wouldn't be a change. That'd be fine with me. So, just let me continue to level effectively by mindless killing/grouping, SE, and I'll remain a happy camper.

Just a note, I don't listen to what anyone but the Devs say when it comes to important info, unless I can find that same info myself. ^^

I can't think of any games that don't have aspects of linearity, this thread makes me laugh.

The only part when the quest becomes challenging is when you start the faction leve (except for whm). Garuda takes a bit of practice if you haven't focused much on her and then Ifrit extreme is quite challenging until you get accustomed to him.

To be honest, XI relics were harder to get in theory. Yet considering that one had the option of just making it a huge gil sink, I think the subject is debatable.
