Question of someone who has got no idea:

What else then either a world with various unconnected quests and grinding or chained quests could be there?

I think there is nothing wrong with this style if it is dynamic, vivid and has got a thrilling and deep storyline. You could make the story not entirely linear but more like a tree: Having one linear line with many side branches maybe.
So it would feel less static and more like an open world. But to me it sounded as if this is where Yoshi is heading anyways (please correct me if I'm wrong).

But really, I prefer playing content and story over grinding that's not connected to content. I mean, I don't want to start playing the actual game when I have reached the level cap...
I want to dive into the game from the start.

The only alternative I could imagine would be to mix grinding/unrelated quests and quest chains. :x

Nope. Hence the line "Question of someone who has got no idea".
I was serious about that phrase.

While I do like the idea of some guidance on where to go and what to do next especially for a new player I dislike the 'follow the path of !'. And yes, we aren't even sure that is what we are getting I am concerned about it. I've played many other MMO that is just follow quest chain after quest chain. Usually you end up doing them solo and even if you want to team up you can't because your partner might not be on the same quest chain as you.

But all that aside, I believe the OP is really looking for options. I am also hoping there is the ability to not just follow the ! and there is a way to just grab your friends and explore the (open)world and if you want to camp and grind mobs you can.

The whole 'as you zone in you will be presented with a list of things to do' worries me a bit and I hope there are things to do that you aren't actually lead to. I don't mind it be there for newer players or something but I hope there will still be some mystery when I enter a new zone.

However, we don't actually know how it is going to work so I'm trying to be open minded about it. I'm hoping there is some balance between hand holding and no guidance at all.

The main purpose of the 'rails' was to make things feel more familiar. like has been said repeatedly, they want to bring FFXIV to the mmo standard.

so essentially i'm expecting a 'me too' game. right now, all we know that will really separate it from the pack is that it is final fantasy.

the fact that the game failed and is being relaunched is generating quite a bit of hype. I hear more about the game now than I ever did when it first launched. but, the downside is it's a relaunch instead of an expansion. either way, we can all expect a big influx in the player base while people try out the changes.

there are a lot of MMOs on the market. many of them follow the rails strategy. while it is not my preferred method, I'll have several 50s already. so i'm not too worried about it. most MMOs are also a race to end-game. as that is where most of the fun stuff happens. so again, the rails concept is more the journey to endgame.

and really, a lot of new players ask 'i'm level 15. what do i do now?' and because they are not familiar with this type of game they are lost. rails provide some structure.

If it were up to me, i would do rail quests up to level 30ish or solo. and then force the player into party content/grind parties and have the game be 'open world' after that point. and have a couple story/quest arcs for jobs/classes and of course the overall global story arcs.

What i am concerned about is the endgame content. we all know that the materia system is being revamped. as long as we dont' have some silly wow-like reputation system we have to worry about grinding daily quests to get points so we can get materia, i'll be...content. Grinding things like Caravan and Hamlet I find tolerable. but if i have to do leve-like content every day i think i'll puke.

For the most part i'll be reserving any judgement until i see the actual execution.

I'd prefer !s over having to use ffxiclopedia to figure out how to finish a quest. The less I have to alt-tab to look something up, the better.

I can't believe they're ruining the game again.

I don't want to get on a train, then get off it and be level 50.

That's silly and ruins my immersion!

That's what you do now. Get on the Natalan Wolf Train, Get off at 50. And you don't even want to do quests. What immersion are you talking about? Pfft.

Just because others love to grind on quests dosent mean that both types of grinds cant exsist., but both should exsist and be balanced so that a player/s can choose how to level up. Hand holding should go no furthure than level 10, its not difficult to figure out what to do. Content needs to be challenging as well as rewarding, not scripted like some dance. All the primals and boss fights are predictable and thats something that needs to be removed. Also rushing to do endgame isnt needed as we are no where near level cap and true endgame wont really start till the final cap is introduced. FFXIV needs to stand out and not be the standard industry MMO. AT this point FFXIV wont stand out as different but just another standard run of the mill MMO.
