    Lets talk of Gear Sets

From what we saw from interviews and the gameplay presentation. There will the addition of Gear Sets. The best part of gear sets is that it will not be counted toward the spaces in our actual bag. Which is a life saver!

Then a million questions began to run through my head. Will the Gear set be class/job exclusive, or will they be shared by entire character. For instance, will I have 5 gear sets for my CNJ/WHM, then 5 more for my PGL/MNK, or will I have to share those gear sets with both of those different classes/jobs.

Also, the fact that the gear is no long part of your bag inventory, will it be set to one and only one gear set, or will one piece of gear be able to exist in multiple of gear sets. For example, for Whm, I decide I want a healing set and a hybrid healing/nuking set. But for both of these sets, I find it necessary to have Healer Boots equip to both. Will I be forced to manually take the boots off one set and add it to another set, or will there be some way to have them exist elsewhere, like some kind of separate "Mannequin Inventory".

    And then....
I kid, what do you think~?

inb4 thread devolves into debate over swapping gear during battle (IT WON'T HAPPEN. GET OVER IT)

I think they'll provide enough gearsets for each job as a minimum. So that's 7. They may round that up to 8. But I don't see the point in limiting a gearset to each job. That's just backwards, inhibitive, and not the philosophy that I think Yoshi-P is going for.

As for swapping gear, I'd imagine them operating like inventory bags. You can pull one up, drop the boots into a bag, pull the other up, then drop it into your other gearset... I don't think that sounds tedious at all, compared to what we've been used to lately.

    Also, Macros.

Ironically the only thing people said against this was:

-Blinking in battle made no sense (yet we see that no longer occurs)

    and

-Having to have multiple gearsets which we see will become a standard feature.

Funny part about the new inventory, when Yoshi was equipping his DRG, there was no blinking from what I saw. o:

    - messes up game balance
    - developers have to create content that is a challenge by recognizing gear-swapping mid-battle as an 'unintended feature'
    - massive lag-generating macros

.. were the other downsides, from what I recall.

Inventory clutter. Situational gear trumping everything. Hybrids becoming overpowered. Gear swaps are not worth it.

Anyway, I believe they mentioned in one of the interviews that the number of gearsets would be equivalent to the number of classes/jobs available. As long as events and instances lock everyone's class (at the very least) upon entry and being "in combat" prevents gear swaps, you won't hear any complaints from me.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.

I am not entirely sure how gearsets are going to deal with shared gear (such as all my melee jobs wearing the same rings, etc), but I'm interested in finding out.

I'm still slightly weary of this being a separate system than classes. Very few other games allow players to switch classes on the same character, so people are going to get frustrated managing their inventory for each job no matter how convenient it's made. I really would have liked to see each job/class having its gear saved and immediately equipped when changed to.

It'd be nice to have a little FFT style job/class wheel where I can see my character as each job with whatever gear is equipped to it and click on it to activate the job, instead of having to physically equip an item to change jobs.

But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and hope they've realized most players are not prepared to have to deal with constantly managing their inventory.

Really that's the only thing anyone has ever had against gear swapping?

Not that the system is counter-intuitive, completely foreign both in terms of game design, and beliveability, and it requires the user to write pseudo-code style macros for every single action they take in the game, in order to properly link specific pieces of gear to each ability.

The idea that there are "only a few things wrong" with gear swapping is exactly the opposite of reality. There is only one redeeming quality for gear swapping at all, and that's the fact that gear swapping allowed for a wider variety of gear to be useful. And there are other ways to accomplish this.

Never forget the DoH and DoL~

But I'd seriously love to get away from having to macro gear for certain situations ever again.

This is why I always craft a multi purpose gear set, like mage set and fighter set, just to save slots
