A good friend was banned for RMT

Hello fellow WoLs,

I know that this post probably would get a lot of hate but a good friend was recently permanently banned for RMT as a first time offender even though he knows of others who only got temporary ban instead. This game has been the main outlet that he uses to cope with his current less than ideal IRL situation so he is quite depressed right now because of the ban. I guess the purpose of this post is that we want to know if anyone has more insight of why some people are perma ban and some are just given a temp ban with a warning.

I wouldn't tempt fate with thinking that they will only give out temporary bans for first timers. No matter what he coped with, the rules are the rules and he broke them. It could be levels of infringement. Did he buy gil or sell gil? Did he advertise it? Etc.
Some might be more permabannable than others.

Could be many reasons, the amount he bought, maybe the gm had a bad day, maybe its the amount of time he played, like in a other mmo i played in the past some veteran players which had thousands of hours in it did only get a clap on the hand, while newer player got the ass full, so there are so many reasons for it, just call it bad luck

RMTers are usually banned if they do obvious stuff they can detect, like probably advertising in city states or transferring huge sums of gil to other players, although I don't know their exact detection methods obviously.

Regular people that aren't actually RMTing but doing other violating activities usually only get temp bans, or no ban at all (usually the case).

It is possible to appeal bans and have the case reviewed. It's worth doing, at least, because I doubt actual RMTers waste time with appeals so they may instantly realize there is something off about it.

That said, if you're saying they actually did do RMT, then... shoulda known they were putting their primary account at risk.

I would assume your friend committed multiple offenses or had a history of offenses, or the severity of what they did this time was deemed enough to permanently ban them.

I sympathise. NO WARNING IS CRUEL AND UNNECESSARY FOR A PERMANENT BAN. In a game that ignores the enforcing of it's own rules all the time.

I beg of you, tell your friend that it sucks. It was cruel. They are unlucky, and it's not really their fault they 'misjudged' it. This game has got to where your friend was probably under a lot of pressure to cut corners. At least they were probably trying to play the game.
Tell them that sadly, even as an RMTer, the game doesn't deserve them when it's enforcement is so CRUEL in its arbitrariness.
Personally, I've a lot more time for RMTers than I do the rubbish individuals that use Crafting, Gathering and market addons.

Kinda hard to chime in without knowing any details. What was he RMTing? Was he the seller or the buyer? How long has he been doing it?

I know that RMT runs rampant in a lot of games. All SE can do is try and keep it to a minimum.

That said, did your friend’s account get compromised? I ask this since no information to give us a better idea on why your friend’s account was banned. Some RMT sites will find ways to compromise accounts and use them in their “Gold Selling” schemes. Such an account can get banned. I would ask your friend if they got a suspicious link while in game and if they used it. If not, then I would petition for SE to unban their account.

This game can provide solace when real life is not so great. We, the players, just have to stay safe when doing so.

If they were participating in RMT, then they should have known the risk of being banned was there. One of the constants from FFXIV is the regular updates to RMT ban waves. It's very hard to miss. While it sucks that others haven't been banned yet, the fact remains that it is always a possibility and involving yourself in RMT is opening yourself to that risk. If you don't want to be banned from a game you need in your life, don't do bannable things.

If they are innocent, that is another matter entirely and best of luck to them.
