The game existed just fine without Mare before, it will exist just fine after.
There was always a "don't ask don't tell" around mods, but since some people can't apparently, you know, keep it to themselves, I honestly don't know what they expected.

Quitters will quit regardless and honestly, if the game is so bad for you. Nothing is forcing you to stay. Please leave. The door is wide open. All you have to do is cancel your sub.

Always complaining about how there's nothing to do when there is so much content in this game. There's just nothing you WANT to do. That's the difference.

Maybe if y'all had a shred of decency towards game developers and the actual people behind the big companies, the world would be a better place. But alas, here we are. Another example of how GREAT the FFXIV community is.

It's absolutely consistent. The difference here is that this one was carelessly advertised all over the place by a large number of players. Their take has always been "Don't talk about it" nothing has changed. People were just stupid and talked about it non-stop on a scale they couldn't ignore. Cheats and harassment due to third party tools have consistently resulted in suspensions and bans.

So next they're gonna go after the infamous allagan melon then? And since everyone also keeps taking about horses, maybe also Dalamud while we're at it?

As this person says, not only are credit card companies tightening their restrictions on adult content, but restrictions on adult content targeted at minors are also being strengthened worldwide (for example, the UK's Online Safety Act).

FFXIV's CERO rating is "C."

Therefore, in order for Square Enix to comply with FFXIV's CERO rating, it is obligated to regulate Mare, which has a mod sharing function and poses the risk of adult mod users sharing adult mods with minors in the game, in order to prevent minors from coming into contact with adult content.

Not only that, adult mod users seem to have no qualms about posting images of obscenely modified FFXIV games on Twitter and Instagram with the tag "#FFXIV."

People who don't play FFXIV would likely assume that images tagged with "#FFXIV" are provided by the official website.

By this logic they would need to regulate THEIR OWN GAME and start censoring content in it.





All in-game offical items, zero modding required. Minors can see it, anyone can tag it #FFXIV. In fact someone in another topic mentioned that the Reddit post linking to these images was BLOCKED for them because they were in the UK.

If this is blocked for anyone else here, the UK law is already technically cracking down on Square-Enix's own content.

For further irony, the Reddit post is from 3 years ago, roughly around the time Mare came out and yet, you wouldn't need it at all to see any player running around in this glam back then or right now.

So if this is a case of Square-Enix going prude and resorting to nannyism because payment processors or the UK demanded it, then I guess they're obligated to clean their own house even as they go after mods, unless their goal is again, to be wildly inconsistent and hypocritical. And keep in mind, it's not just limited to VISUAL sexual content, the things being banned by payment processors or the UK also includes sexual references in WRITING so even the game's script would need to be scrubbed to comply.

The Anti-Mare crowd doesn't care. Like all puritans they will throw you under the bus the second it's convenient. Well at least until their browsing history is revealed.

I truly and genuinely believe that these "Internet Puzritans" only do this for an ulterior motive and that they are not trustworthy.

Genuinely do not care what someone does with their free time. Be safe be happy and be good to others.

The devs don't want to hurt players that are just in their own lane and don't want to implement anti-cheat, which brings on a whole host of issues that would tangibly hurt the game in ways this barely scrapes.

But the tool-that-shall-not-named that got destroyed had the dual function of pushing mods and syncing them between players on a wholly separate server from SE's. It both encouraged players to share info for that purpose with each other, but also turned over some account info to a third party. That tool also made money.

There are *several* issues with that outside of any puritanical opinions.

Plus, with credit card companies restricting how purchasing adult content is done, tool-that-shall-not-named very well could've run into legal issues completely separate from SE as it was popular for spreading adult content.

(That could also be why SE would want to take action and take it down. They don't want to deal with all of that from a mod tool that they don't allow in their ToS.)

Pretty much all of this. When I heard it was using Account IDs just like the stalker plugin was, I winced a bit. I would bet anything that and making money on it were two of the major causes. The constant speaking of it in game places didn't help either.

I don't think modders realized that Mare would inevitably become collateral damage from SE working the Account ID access issues, anyway.

And I fully understand that the difference here was consent, as much as that goes against common-sense cyber security. You had to register and shared your ID manually, so it felt *different* to modders. But hacking is 90% social-engineering, and this is proof of that phenomenon.

And SE, as part of that same common-sense cyber security, has to be radio silent on the changes being made on their end. That's just the way of things in hacking. You make the other side figure it out and cat and mouse it forever.

Don't even need to check their browsing history actually, quite a few of the anti-Mare posters on this very forum have openly spoken out against the idea of banning things like ACT and Cactbot just like Mare was.

"Rules for thee but not for me" when it comes to supporting ToS-breaking mods apparently.
