Well, as the things usually go. The loud minority ruining the fun for everybody else.
This is true, insofar that they cannot do everything that players want (even more broadly speaking), and about compromise to a degreeYoshi P understands that they cannot possibly do everything the players want as far as glamours go and his compromise was to turn a blind eye to mods so long as modders were reasonable and didn't behave irresponsibly. I called it "The first rule of fight club is don't talk about fightclub" agreement because he was willing to let players use them so long as they didn't do so in a way that forced him to follow through on the game's policies in an official capacity.
Well... guess what people did with the aforemented mod that was banished to the shadowrealm? this entire situation is the consequences of their own actions, but somehow they've deluded themselves into believing that it is somehow Square Enix's fault.
But it actually is Square Enix's fault mutually as it is the community.
Square Enix have created a situation where they are wanting all of the upsides of modding, yet none of the downsides of it, and this just ain't practical. The ToS effectively amounts to a land of the lawless, and at some point it will run rampant. (Already has, and it will again), because the ToS itself is silly, as is the actual enforcement of it.
I am not just talking about Mare here specifically, but even the development, e.g., we actually saw plugins that enabled stalking due to their complete inaction... Plus, we talk about "Don't talk about fight club" - But this isn't really the way it works at all lol, this community is very loud with modding in general, it just so happened that Mare ended up being the loudest.
Even as it stands now, really.. It's actually only speculation whether this situation is due to how loud it was, or whether it was due to another reason, e.g., security concerns, or concerns about it utilizing the same account IDs that a certain other plugin did. Them taking down the tool is a big deal, but it is also simultaneously a nothing burger. Why? Because we will see a new one after everything has settled, and then we'll be back at step one again because they've technically not actually enforced their ToS on the players.

Genuinely do not care what someone does with their free time. Be safe be happy and be good to others.
The devs don't want to hurt players that are just in their own lane and don't want to implement anti-cheat, which brings on a whole host of issues that would tangibly hurt the game in ways this barely scrapes.
But the tool-that-shall-not-named that got destroyed had the dual function of pushing mods and syncing them between players on a wholly separate server from SE's. It both encouraged players to share info for that purpose with each other, but also turned over some account info to a third party. That tool also made money.
There are *several* issues with that outside of any puritanical opinions.
Plus, with credit card companies restricting how purchasing adult content is done, tool-that-shall-not-named very well could've run into legal issues completely separate from SE as it was popular for spreading adult content.
(That could also be why SE would want to take action and take it down. They don't want to deal with all of that from a mod tool that they don't allow in their ToS.)
This is likely the reason for the whole issue - I actually question if this was even SE that approached the creator.

The server contained posts of Floof mentioning they were "very close to being able to afford a house" too just before the shutdown. I, unfortunately, can not provide proof of this however. So it is ultimately just hearsay.

This would actually make a lot sense considering they've never pushed to take down other mods and when they have been openly against mods and made public statements (such as the stalker plugin) Though of course this is only speculation really.
It seems a bit weird that they would target one mod that will likely get replicated down the line rather then going after the main one that hosts them.

Pretty much all of this. When I heard it was using Account IDs just like the stalker plugin was, I winced a bit. I would bet anything that and making money on it were two of the major causes. The constant speaking of it in game places didn't help either.Genuinely do not care what someone does with their free time. Be safe be happy and be good to others.

The NSFW Stuff will not be gone, its just the Option that other People see what you do, we will still have NSFW advices and all that stuff, the whole Point about removing it was straight up pointless

The game existed just fine without Mare before, it will exist just fine after.
There was always a "don't ask don't tell" around mods, but since some people can't apparently, you know, keep it to themselves, I honestly don't know what they expected.
Quitters will quit regardless and honestly, if the game is so bad for you. Nothing is forcing you to stay. Please leave. The door is wide open. All you have to do is cancel your sub.
Always complaining about how there's nothing to do when there is so much content in this game. There's just nothing you WANT to do. That's the difference.
Maybe if y'all had a shred of decency towards game developers and the actual people behind the big companies, the world would be a better place. But alas, here we are. Another example of how GREAT the FFXIV community is.![]()
Through twilight, we endure.

Exactly what would this achieve? Not that I am endorsing anything, but driving players away, no matter how many, is a very poor choice to make at this point.
