I don't know if I get your meaning. Do you mean this game, or just any game? I think one of the things going for this game is its complex crafting/gathering interface. They've managed to make civilian classes almost equal to combat classes.

As for two-player synthesis, FFXI has something called Synergy where both crafters bring materials to a machine and apply their skills to it. This machine will sometimes go unstable and damage the crafters, but otherwise it's essentially what you're saying. For XIV they wouldn't necessarily need to change the animations. Maybe just have the two crafters sit across from each other and put the light (a bigger light) in the middle. Then the crafters take turns manipulating the synthesis.

The problem is that we already have semi-collaborative recipes. A BSM will make some parts, a CRP will make other parts, and then one or the other will assemble them into a weapon. I think for certain sensitive items, like an unstable chemical concoction that requires the efforts of both a CUL and an ALC (they could call it a Twinkie!), co-op crafting would be good. Either that or, as you said, large-scale synthesis like airship parts.
