I think everyone grasps the concept that we have to "deal with it." I have no problem either way, if they were to remove it or keep it. I also find it to be better even outside of PvP due to things hitting you from the rear and doing extra damage. If you were to completely turn around in PvP then the fight would most likely be over. So, like I said, whether backwards walking is there or not, it still isn't just a PvP feature. The game would work with or without it.
Though, I also have to say that I do like the feature due to these reasons:
1. If you do not like to walk backwards, you still have the option to turn around and run, and it is immerse that you wouldn't be able to see behind you + you would take that extra damage.
2. You are able to move back slightly and still fight your enemies.
3. This feature works the same way as the current version if you were to have something locked on. Unless you haven't played anything other than a mage with your weapon withdrawn at all times.. Except in 2.0 it would make it much easier to simply turn around and run other than having to dis-select the lock-on or put your weapon away and then run.
All in all, I see it as a feature that adds to the game, and does not make it worse.
I just have to say though, I know it is in alpha phase, but it looks really retarded when walking backwards diagonally. lol I'm pretty sure this will be fixed though.
I don't think he's actually walking backwards with s hit only, I think he is accidentally strafing backwards, if you watch it he kind of glides like people do when they strafe. I could be wrong though. I hope the walking animations from FFXIV 1.0 stay, but... I'm doubting they will, sadly.
In one of the interviews, it was stated that animations were re-worked. I'm not sure about the running or walking or emotes, as they all look the same as 1.0 animations in the video. They might have mentioned the re-working specifically to Weaponskills and Casting animations.I don't think he's actually walking backwards with s hit only, I think he is accidentally strafing backwards, if you watch it he kind of glides like people do when they strafe. You can turn off auto lock in the config just like I'm hoping you can change this "forever locked on" style of gameplay off. I'm not against this type of camera control, it can be good for combat. I just hope I don't have to use it outside of battle because of a lack of settings.3. This feature works the same way as the current version if you were to have something locked on. backward walking will be useful while fighting, especially for blocking, and parrying. You can't do those with your back..
That is a great point. I hadn't thought of that. Although for mages it would just be an annoyance. More of a reason to have a toggle for it. That's what we need, like a /textcommand that toggles on/off auto-facing.
mages can equip shields too. To me it makes sense for your character to face and see what they're fighting rather than having their backs turned without seeing what they're casting at. And, when they need to run they can just turn around and flee. To each their own/
edit. but both ways work fine anyways

Please Walk Backwards!
Away from this thread.
Okay so, this topic is giving me headaches so I decided to study the video. I'm using the new, non-shaky one that JPGames.de put up.
In at least one instance, when he is running downhill on passive mode, he turns the camera to the left while running in a certain direction, sufficiently that you can get a side view of the character, while still running in that direction. However in other instances he is running and turning with the camera. Sounds like the camera won't be locked on the direction your character is facing, unless you're using auto-run, just like now.
Hell, look at 12:30 of that video, he turns the camera BACKWARDS while running towards the camera, this should assuage your fears.
However, further ahead while fighting a bunch of chigoes, he turns on active mode and THEN he backpedals.
So yes, when in passive mode, you can run towards whatever direction you want, and apparently active mode makes you backpedal. What makes sense, actually? Since blocking and parrying both are done only in the direction your're facing and even for a Dragoon it would be good to parry (hell, i've parried Nael on my Dragoon)
And to be sure we're all looking at the same video: http://youtu.be/Pwenut2xit8
