I watched the newer video closely and it seems like that's the normal walk, not even locked onto a monster. Kinda hope it's something just not enabled yet. I like the movement now as it is.
They should keep movement how it is in 1.0.... It just feels so natural how it is now.
haters gonna hate
The build they showed seemed to be missing some animations. There's no job change graphic, and there's no chocobo whistle sound or animation. It's not unreasonable to think that the backwards-diagonal animation isn't in there yet either.
I walk backwards all the time.
I think they're still in a very early phase so that the animation will be cleared eventually. I wouldn't worry >>too<< much about not-yet-smooth things in the vid due to the pre alpha state. Not saying that we should not give feedback (we definitely should) but maybe we don't need to worry too much now. We should worry if this was shortly before the release.![]()
I see the backwards walking as an intended change to the game. Especially with PvP on the way.
1.XX:
You're able to start running full speed in any direction regardless of what direction the camera is facing. This could get annoying and make balancing PvP difficult.
2.0:
Walking towards the camera = backpedal. In order to go in a certain direction (excluding strafe left/right) you will need to spin the camera. <-- This is how almost every other MMO works.
But as I said, it's not just about making it standard it's definitely for PvP. I can't imagine how annoying it would be to do PvP when people can just start to run full speed in any direction.
TLDR: This is done on purpose. It's a much better mechanic. Stop crying.

This is how I feel when I read posts on these boards:

Though i agree with this being a worthy thread. Best to get our feedback out before any changes hit the cutting floor. I also like the movement we currently have. being able to turn and run backwards without swinging the camera is actually pretty helpful at times. Also lets you do quite a bit of movement while keeping your camera trained on a place you want to watch.
This may be one of the somewhat few areas where i would totally support an Options toggle for a type of auto-lockon or free movement (more akin to what we have now minus a lockon.)
This could also be helpful for Current FF14 player to move as they are used to. And new players who are used to what appears to be a more mainstream control stiyle.
Coming from so many other games i actually enjoy the current FF14 movement. Its more all the elements that effect it that are the problems. (UI, Latency and such)
Besides my issue with your TLDR...I see the backwards walking as an intended change to the game. Especially with PvP on the way.

It may well be intended. However In almost every other MMO you can also swing your camera, and take off running in any direction anyway. I would concider this more of a moot point. Unless your rotation speed was so low that it took too much movement to swing your camera.
The main difference really is that camera position doesn't dictate direction directly, so to speak. I have no issue with either pvp wise. since everyone would have it available its neither an advantage or disadvantage.
I always strafe away in PVP anyway, its much faster then backpedaling. Basiclly, if they put it in to remove escaping in a backwards direction, it likely won't have the desired effect.
I think the intent is to have controls similar to other MMOs, so movement isn't different to what folks are used to as they come to 2.0 for the first time. I don't see a reason why they could not include the controls we are already used to.

So basically, PvP is going to ruin what unique features FFXIV ever had? Gee, sounds grand! Can't wait!
