I Miss Buying Mogstation Items

I simply can't bring myself to do it anymore, no matter how badly I want something, because I care about the quality and longevity of FFXIV.

While they certainly enhanced my game experience, the key factor that made me make purchases in the past was to support the game I loved. However it's become blatantly obvious over time that the cash flow generated by the mogstation isn't being re-invested into the game. Not to mention the last few...questionable choices they made with item drops and pricing.

Do they really need us to boycott the cash shop to send a clear message? SE just seems wildly out of touch.

Going to agree that I find some of the additions lately to be relatively lackluster, personally.

But I know several people who went "OMG KITTY" and dropped money on the Shag Cat without a second thought.

Im pretty sure mogstation money was never re-invested into the game. Paying the sub fee supports maintenance and updates and buying expansions supports future expansions. Buying digital items from the mogstation only supports the CEO's new yacht.

They previously said that it went to data center equipment - stuff like the move from Montreal to California (which was a downgrade for the east coasters but an upgrade in server infrastructure), the EU data center, and the Oceania data center.

Physical servers cost money. Data center maintenance costs money. Replacing the hardware every 3-5 years (when it goes out of commercial warranty) costs money.

The extra money has never gone to the personnel for actual in game content or assets, as far as I know.

Subcription fees are a more consistent cash flow so thats whats used for data center maintenance and replacing hardware. They may have dipped into the mogstation money for the server transfer because that was a one time thing and they could use that as a selling point, but thats it and that was years ago.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to justify their own decision to waste their money out of FOMO and delude themselves into thinking its for a good cause. Don't fall for it. Just pay the sub fee and buy the new expansions on launch and SE will be fine.

It wasn't "years ago"

It was a years long ongoing project. Dynamis data center wasn't even completed until last year, for Dawntrail's launch.

And what a wasted "project" that turned out to be given the state of Dynamis population-wise.

I do half agree with you on that, that's why I even relinquished my house and left when I saw how dead it was when I came back.

That said, it was a big time blessing to have Dynamis to offload the excess to during the Dawntrail launch. So while I doubt we'll ever hit a population high enough to justify its full time use or anything. It will be very handy for expansion launches.
