These should be throwaway items that we use at rando parties because the healer went splat, they shouldn't cost next to anything.

Why would we be buying stacks of 999 if the cost is 999,000 gil?

Because you have 96 mio Gil. There is too much Gil in the game, so they add a new Gil sink.

But this argument is kind of mood because it will only cost you like 1% of your money and a stack of 999 will last you like forever.

A stack of 99 will already last you a long while for just 100k Gil. They are really not that expensive.

Given how I've used maybe 3 Phoenix Downs during the whole time I've been subscribed, stack of 999 would last quite an while.

They've always been like 1 gil on the market board. No point even buying them from a vendor.

You don't need actual huge stacks of them. There's a long cooldown on using them anyway, so just having 5 on you is enough.
