That mostly makes me worry that it may be a short live event that is easily missable... :C"something in the story will happen and the servers will be shut down."
Ok, so following Living in a Prayer, Dalamud is looking to fall in the SE area of Mor Dhona, where a concentration of Darnus' legion is supposed to be also located, which is also a 'summoning' area being set up by the Circle of Knowledge, to draw the 12 into our dimension to deal with Meteor...so the battle we see in the trailer.
Thing is..the trailer they've been showing.. other than Odin and Behemoth's screencaps and I suppose the chocobos running through green areas, everything else that happens in the first trailer is the battle between us and the empire.
So, is SE using that trailer as a part of the main entrance movie for 2.0, to explain what happened before and what has become of the world now, bringing us to ARR?
Or are they planning to use that same video to show us the battle itself, as they shut the servers down.
This is the battle.. this is where you get taken away.. and that's it, until ARR comes back up.
Its a precarious thing really, its also what I've worried about with this entire idea. How are they planning to transition us, in the game world sense, from where we are now to where we're going? I remember how it happened in GW, so maybe similiar to that. You go to what is the final stage in GW pre-apoc, watch the CS as the world is destroyed and then return to post-apoc world, just as you were before.
Suppose the other idea is.. they could begin to systematically shut down areas and access points through our current game world, Atomos for instance killing the aether points, disabling teleportation between camps and nodes. Then disabling teleportation between ourselves and camps completely. The cities coming under attack by a mass Garlean seige at the same time, on a grand scale, some large 12 hour period on all servers at once and there at the end, forced into combat you hear Lousiox(sp?)'s voice in your head, telling you he tried..light surrounds us..and thats it, everything goes black, servers down.
Side idea.. they could also give us a final quest line following it all, the battle with the empire at mor dhona, give you the warning message prior to going into the instance 'This is the final segement for the Seventh Umbral Era, by entering this instance, you cannot return to the game world as you know it. Upon its end, for your character, the Seventh Umbral Era has concluded..and he/she will not return until ARR is opened. This is a one way path. Are you ready?" and thats it.. say yes.. join the mass battle against Alliance and Empire in a massive scale battle.. and wait until you return to ARR.
Because otherwise.. you're gonna go log off in your inn, servers gonna shut down and you're going to wake up to find a brand new war ridden world a few months later. Some folks would be rather pissed if they missed the chance to be part of that moment, I know I would lol I'll take a day or two of vacation for that.
Well, sadly they've already said this. When 2.0 was first being announced Yoshi-P said they would continue on a grand storyline to bring the current world to an end, while ushering in the new one, to tie it all together. But its going to be a once in a lifetime sort of event, just as the Goobbue was a once in a life time thing, either you got it while it was available or you miss it forever. So something is going to happen and it will have an expiration time on how long it will be available to us before they have to finally hit the kill switch and everything goes down.
I believe in an interview it was said that A Realm Reborn is currently on schedule for a 2013 launch. It has also been mentioned that servers are shutting down soon - probably some time in September or early October. It's going to be much longer than a month of downtime with that in mind.
Seems like the servers could be down for quite some time. Three months, five months, maybe more.
We will all surviveThe new Square Enix Fall Lineup (Sleeping Dogs + Hitman), Tales of Graces F, One Piece Pirate Warriors, endless new blu-ray releases and walks in the brown, red, yellow colored forests with our loved ones will help us to withstand our anti-social MMO life we have.
Their perspective of the word soon doesnt bother me, not like next week.
I said it somewhere else, I could see them going into alpha testing now, tweaking it, polishing off some of the things people have mentioned from Gamescom interviews, pic reveals and even the videos floating around online. Closed Beta will begin after that, with XIV players taking a priority on the que list for that and open beta later on. I would forsee CB lasting a month or two, get actual player feedback, continue tweaking, bug fixes, glitch works, etc and about the same time they're ready to start OB, shut the servers down and run OB while they transfer data, run stress tests with more participants than CB allowed and run it for as long as they need too until all the data is transferred completely, no major meltdown errors in the way and start distributing the actual ARR client software at that point. So really..I dont forsee a true shut down until Mid-Late October.
Once the current game goes offline It will not be coming back.Servers will shut down prior to 2.0 for an unspecified amount of time (they won't run simultaneously as stated previously) and original players will be priority for the beta!
I hope theyre not down longer than a week! I'll go crazy!

Surviving isn't an issue. Moving on and no longer caring about the game, that's the issue SE should be worried about.
Do them in a party with friends.
You will each get credit for each others leves.
Just don't link them.
