Did this really come as such a surprise to people? I was expecting this from the moment they announced it, ARR is no small change you know.

I thought it was fairly obvious from the roadmap we got over a year back that there would be some down time between the close of 1.X and the start of 2.0 release.
I just hope that the downtime between the close of 1.X and the start of 2.0 Beta isn't very long.

It could be way more than a month depending on how the beta goes. They gotta fix those issues with the new client before thinking of launching it.

That's fine... I haven't touched FFXIII-2 yet... and Darksiders II just came out lol
This is really sad. I started maybe a month ago, am only level 32 arch, and a few lower levels harvesting classes. This game is just starting to get really exciting for me. The linkshell I'm in is great--I am starting to make friends.
While I would like to say the downtime won't matter. To be honest after a month I don't know how I will still feel about this game. If we have to wait months, that is a big chunk of entertainment time. Bad position... The GW system never entertained me and WoW is aging and (so I've heard) is a very different beast.
(edit: I did not know about 2.0 when I bought the game.)

I have plenty of exams at the start of the new year so it's actually better if I study at the end of the year instead of playing FFXIV
I always un-sub for exams anyways but it comes with the bad feeling of missing something and it's always a hassle to get back into the game after a 1-2 month long period of absence.
With servers being down I know I'm not missing any content, no new people who I don't know joined the LS, etc.^^
I want this game to succeed so it needs proper testing, but still I hope they won't take too long otherwise people will start to lose interest and become too attached to the game and community they've played with during the down time (in GW2, Tera, or whereever).

THe plan was to be shut down a month for data transfer and RRB software distribution PC side. It will take time for all that. Then more patching.
I doubt they will have to much down time for peopel who have purchased a game and service they expect to keep going. Some of us paid 79.99 USD at launch

I may have to go with another poster's thought and just play GW2 or something else during the downtime. As much as playing Beta sounds nice, I dont really see a point, for myself personally. Its good for the testing purposes, stress tests and getting player feedback on things from consumer to developer perspective. But I dont see a point in doing anything that wont carry over to the main launch itself from Beta, even if I do it with the same character as I play now, unless for some odd reason they make it so it Will cross over..gil, inventory, experience, etc. That I'd consider, otherwise, just play another game and wait till the relaunch goes live and jump back in then.
Then again, my stance my be a little different than others, because I'm far from addicted to the game and have gone a week or more at a time without coming in game at all, just either out of lack of desire or due to other obligations, it doesnt phase me like it did in XI. Thankfully.
