⚔️ Gunbreaker Job Class Suggestions for Improvement (Patch 7.2 and Beyond)

Gunbreaker Job Critique – Final Fantasy XIV (Patch 7.2)

    Summary:
Gunbreaker (GNB) is FFXIV’s high-octane, fast-paced tank, combining gunblade combos and burst windows into an aggressive playstyle that feels more like a DPS with tank durability. However, it suffers from low passive sustain, rigid burst alignment, and underwhelming regen utility that lags behind other tanks in self-sufficiency.

    Strengths:
    • High, consistent DPS: With Continuation, Gnashing Fang combo, and Double Down, GNB contributes top-tier damage in both burst and sustained scenarios.
    • Good mitigation suite: Tools like Camouflage, Nebula, and Heart of Corundum provide strong defensive coverage.
    • Best-in-class mobility: Rough Divide charges allow excellent repositioning without sacrificing uptime.

    Weaknesses:
    • Low self-healing: Despite Aurora and Heart of Corundum, GNB lacks meaningful self-sustain compared to Warrior or Paladin.
    • Burst rigidity: Gnashing Fang and No Mercy rotations are tightly timed, punishing delays or mistakes.
    • Fragile in solo or low-healing content: Without passive regen or healing-on-damage mechanics, GNB can feel brittle outside ideal party conditions.

    Suggested Improvements:

    1. Increase Potency of Regen Skills:
    • Aurora: Increase total potency from 720 to 960 over 18 seconds.
    • Heart of Corundum: Boost the regen from 600 to 900 potency total and make the regen duration scale with the full 8s of the mitigation.

This would help close the sustain gap between GNB and its tank peers without altering job flow.

    2. Improve Camouflage Utility:
    • Add a secondary effect: “While Camouflage is active, incoming healing is increased by 15%.”
    • Encourages synergy with Aurora, HoC, and party heals.

    3. Smooth Out No Mercy Burst Windows:

    Add a trait that:
    • Extends No Mercy duration from 20s to 25s, giving more breathing room for weaving oGCDs, especially in high-ping environments.

    4. Enhance Superbolide Interactivity:
    • Still the most punishing “cheat death” among tanks.
    • Add a small AoE burst or shield on use (e.g., “Explodes on activation, dealing 300 potency to nearby enemies and granting a 100 potency shield to party members”).

    5. QoL Fixes:
    • Allow Continuation to queue between combo finishers for smoother weaving.
    • Improve UI tracking of Gnashing Fang combo cooldown and expiration—especially in controller setups.

    Conclusion:
Buffing its healing skills, updating Camouflage, and smoothing its burst execution would keep GNB sharp while giving it the staying power and adaptability expected of a top-tier tank.

I've only read this far into the post and I have already started the reply with the now normal question of, do you actually play the job? Anyone with some knowledge should be able to tell you what is wrong with the above statement.

But, some people enjoy that, it is a different style of gameplay that is different to the other tanks.

Are you working with outdated information? Aurora is 300 potency per tick over 18 seconds, that is 1800 total potency healed. That is stronger than Clemency (1000), Holy Sheltron (1000) and a 4 GCD Bloodwhetting (1600 potency), the only thing beating it is Equilibrium for a total of 2200 potency.
Heart of Corundum doesn't give a regen effect, it is a straight heal for 900 potency when you hit 50% (or the effect expires). Do you even play Gunbreaker.

About the only sensible suggestion so far (haven't read further, literally making this reply as I go), though you want the wording to be different to match Rampart.

GNB doesn't have many things to weave, especially now that Rough Divide is gone and, at least in the 2 minute burst, you have less Burst Strikes to worry, not that extending No Mercy window helps with any of those issues as you have to use Continuation within that GCDs cooldown or you lose it. Would make no difference based on the reasoning given.

Is it? It is an up to 50% reduction in health and makes you invulnerable for 10 seconds, where you can use Aurora and get a minimum of 900 potency healing and if you really want, you can use Heart of Corundum as well and Superbolide will automatically proc the healing from it. Also, you do not want potency to be tied to it, that would be silly.

Literally goes against the spirit of Gunbreaker and you have no excuse for ping as it is 1 oGCD in the GCD window and you know exactly when they are coming.
It is no different to any other GCD that has a cooldown. Also, no issue with Double Down? Odd.

Improving Camouflage is about the only thing that would be an improvement. The healing is already better than you think it is and expanding the No Mercy window doesn't help in smoothing out the burst execution. Again, do you actually play the job?

Instead of sanding down the edges and making it more like other tanks, I'd rather see more friction to the job. It's fine for them to be bad at some things and better at others. We need more of that tbh.

The last thing tanks need is more self healing and I agree with Exmo above, your feedback across multiple threads would only further homogenize the jobs which is the opposite of what the devs should be doing.

Why did you spend all the time writing this thread and never think to yourself maybe you should actually try playing the job its about?

EDIT: All four of these threads are filled with suggestions that have already been in the game for at least a year. AI slop.

he also apparently doesn't want healers anymore because all four make healer legit useless and unneeded x)

The em-dashes ultimately give it away, coupled with the absurd amount of factual errors you always get from AI: This is someone just farming engagement. Report and move on.

My suggestions are meant to FFXIV to lean more into the identity of GNB as essentially a Regen tank. Of the four tanks, I play GNB the least because I do not find it as enjoyable as the other 3. I mean to say boost the healing from Conondrum. Honest mistake.

It is actually hilarious that your solution to Superbolide being punishing because it damages you is to give it damage potency so that it'll be pressed on cooldown unless needed for an invuln strat. Finally GNB gets to be the game's true Dark Knight.
