Bumping this up as well. I'm not from the cultures that SE is trying to depict, but having actual Conquistador "inspired" armor is very, very insensitive.

I'm not from South America, but reading what people said is enough to understand that this set is offensive and shouldn't be in the game. I expect devs to listen to them
Like all the other people who have hopped on to co-sign this, there is nothing that I could say that has not been said better by others. So I am just throwing my agreement into the plethora of voices that say Do Better - Now.
Lending my voice to this thread. As a Puerto Rican player, it's incredibly disheartening to see them confuse Cortez-like european colonizer gear from Spain with Latin America in the expansion that they proudly declared to have sensitivity readers. The sets look good and clearly have had a lot of effort put into their make, but why not their design? How did this get pass multiple checks? It's very confusing, when Dawntrail's first half was so insightful and celebratory of indigenous Latam people in Tural. I've loved this expansion despite its faults due to how much it reminds me of stuff I love and what it enables me to do for personal character roleplay and what not, but this is unacceptable.
I know SE has never historically removed any gearset people have found offensive, but having Cortez/Tercio conquistador armor in the same group as mystical native caster gear (the only inoffensive pieces, mind)? In the same expansion celebrating indigenous Latin Americas? It is so hilariously tone deaf that I can't help but attribute it to just pure ignorance from what the designers thought looked cool in their office paintings. Please at least acknowledge the problem, SE. I also wouldn't mind if they simply replaced them with dyable versions of the Yuweyawata stuff as compensation and saved these sets for a future expansion in different contexts if they cannot be removed at all.

I think a very big reason why conquistadores specifically are so unacceptable is because they existed SOLELY within the context of 'let's genocide natives'. The point of their existence was to kill and enslave populations so Spain could settle and use their land. There is no other associated history with them. It's virtually impossible to incorporate that into a fictional world without the political context they carry. Which in turn means: if you're not going to actually deal with colonial violence, maybe keep its greatest symbols out of the drawing board, hm?
Posted in the general thread as well but reiterating here: These are horrifically offensive. Give us dyeable old gear, give us more recolors, I don't care, just do not put this mess into the game.
Bumping to share support -- I think some people would also agree that if the team need more time to fix this, then delaying the patch by a week or two would not be the end of the world. The recolour of the Yuyewata sets (or another, similar set) idea is a good suggestion for the team, as it is quick and simple as far as this would go. But if they really want to go the extra effort, a delay is fine. Better than fine, as it would show commitment without it potentially being rushed and harming the patch's overall quality.
I do not wish to speak on the behalf of the fans this actually effects (I'm a white European), but it's baffling to see such carelessness -- I can see the idea. It's interesting. Meso Terminal houses data from both Turali and Alexandrian people, so it would make sense for the gear to reflect both cultures. It does not make any sense that the Alexandrian set is entirely new and based off of European colonisers instead of FFIX characters who have not recieved any representation within the available gear. Garnet's jumpsuit? Freya's coat? The Turali gear also obviously reusing assets at the expense of these offensive outfits is baffling -- do better.
It also sucks that once again, phys ranged is getting screwed over in the crossfire. As it is, this job type already has a questionable history of orientalist outfits relating to the dancer job. It's a bit shocking to see this seemingly unfairly affect these players the most once again. Seriously!

Bumping! Several good points have already been made in the general discussion. As well as it's become an example over the fact that the gear appeals to a especific type of people. I really don't know how the devs can keep this in game anymore.
> People on there are even bringing modern day LATAM military uniforms but I only bring this up as more reason to avoid releasing the gearsets. Modern day military is entreched with the repression of social movements, corruption and to be very honest most of LATAM's military organizations have a long history of repression against indigenous people. Claiming that's the true inspiration for the gearsets while mixing them with more "native" sets its equally tone deaf.
> The gearset seems to be more for Xak Tural so I dont really think LATAM's military uniforms work as an excuse.
> And just for future's sake. would also be great, to have appreciation for ORIGINAL American(as a continent) cultures without them being long dead civilizations (ronkan empire) or something that always has to be entrenched with European intervention.

Throwing my $0.02 in here; I'm really disappointed that conquistador inspired looks made their way as dungeon gear into this patch. The concept behind Tural as a country within the world of XIV was it was a LatAm inspired place that was never colonized. The first half of DT felt incredibly celebratory of these places and cultures in ways that media often doesn't. I enjoyed this expac explicitly because of that. My family has Panamian roots and I grew up on the cusp of the American Southwest; it was genuinely charming to see things I recognized as inspired from those sources. It was not perfect but I could feel the effort to do better being taken, particularly in comparison to when Blue Mage became a thing and the Whalaqee's story was first told. That this expansion even went back to re-tell that story and make it better communicated a desire to do better.
Which makes the fact this dungeon gear looks inspired by Cortez (especially the Fending and Maiming outfits) extra disappointing. It registers as undercutting everything the first half of this expansion was supposed to be about, and supposed to celebrate, in favor of at the end letting the colonizing force put their thumbprint on this region again. Particularly when there are so many great sources of inspiration that could be incorporated instead! Even moreso when you have better gearsets that reflect you did do a modicum of research. I would truly not mind having another recolor of a different set, like the Yuweyawata stuff or a dungeon drop iteration of the crafted gearsets. I do at least wish SE would acknowledge this mistake publicly. I have seen SE do better than this (not perfect, but better), which only compounds my disappointment and inspires me to speak up. You have done better before.
Made my forum account specifically to bump as a show of my support for all those people who've already spoken, particularly those who can speak from personal experience as being from the places where this is historically and culturally relevant.
