Players are leaving the game at record pace. The remaining players need servers with other players to have something to do.
People want to move to the servers that aren't gasping out dying breaths.
Having anything even remotely viable to play on as 'congested' at a time when players are already losing interest is a bad look and just leads to more lost subs.
Honestly, the team calling the shots at XIV is displaying incompetence every single time they can
TBH, there were 2 open worlds on Aether before 7.2, so it's not too long ago you could do a paid transfer over until the most recent update. I wouldn't mind since more players means faster queue, apart from the general travellers here.

75% of the playerbase disappeared and aether is still congested. OK SE.
Is it possible that Aether is still in lockdown as a last-ditch, futile attempt to save Dynamis?
As others have noted, Aether is noticeably quieter, so in terms of active accounts the "congested" status is puzzling.

We're in the patch lull. Many players are possibly playing other things, I know a few FC mates went back to REPO or XI while waiting to see what 7.3 brings.

Really this. This has happened in the month before a major patch release ever since I can remember for the last 10 years...
There should be no congested servers now when less people are playing the game. It's bs and I think we all know it.
100% this.
It's SE trying two things:
1) To make the failure that is dynamis not be a failure. Give it up. It's a failure.
2) To try and pretend somehow the servers are all overflowing with people even though they are emptying out at an alarming rate.
Typical SE response. Stick head in sand and pretend things are collapsing around them. Maybe if they just do nothing like they always do, the problem will magically go away yet again?
The only thing going away at this rate is XIV.

Congestion doesn't factor in pre-patch lulls. It calculates congestion at peak times after a major patch. A majority of players don't play FFXIV every day of the year. As someone who is on Aether and does some crafting for the server. After a patch comes out, I can't keep stock of key foods/potions, until the patch lull hits, and that's fine and should be normal. Y'all are literally going 'we are in between patches, players stopped playing' no crap Shirlock. Have you played any other MMO, there are normal dips when content is no longer 'fresh.' SEs response to keep player engagement during this time is the mogtome event. Sure, it won't keep a chunk of the players in the game during downtimes, but it does help somewhat. To try and pretend somehow the servers are all overflowing with people even though they are emptying out at an alarming rate.

What would your solution to fix this normal life cycle of an MMO be?
