I took a break shortly after "finishing" the MQ of Dawntrail (basically after defeating Queen Sphene and Zoraal Ja)

It's such an awesome feeling to come back into the game and have more story to do. I know people like to shit on this game but so few games out there have this feeling of excitement. The fact you can feel free (at least I do) to take a break. Come back and have so much to look forward to do is amazing.

I've played a lot of other games and none of them have the same feeling.

Lose it. I did. Snagged 11-16 in Mist when a lot of people moved to Shirogane. Sat that that plaque for 2 days waiting to purchase it. Let the house demolish during the early days of COVID since my necessary communications job wasn't enough to keep it when I couldn't log in for extended periods. Lose the house. It's just virtual. One day it will be gone just like this game. Maybe not now, maybe not 10 years from now, but some day SE will end this project. You'll not have it then, so....

Was housing advertised as a luxury commodity from the start of its implementation or was the demolition timer just latched on because they couldnt/didnt want / were talent hamstringed to not give more housing wards / houses?

I don't have a house, nor have I ever had any interest in wanting one. I'm free to "take a break" with no real drawbacks whenever I want (plenty of catch-up mechanics for when I return). Think about how the hundreds of thousands of active players, and think what % actually have a house...yeah, only a relative handful are really affected by this.

It's the necessity of having to take them because there is so little to do.

I have plenty to do. I played on and off from around 2015-2021, then this game as my main MMO from 2021-2025, and when I took my first break in several years a few months ago, it wasn't because of a lack of things to do - I had just been playing a lot for a long time and felt like doing something else for a bit. I came back with the new Moogle event and still have plenty to do.

Imagine thinking of achievements as good content and blaming people for not wanting to catch a fish 5000 times

Imagine being unable to comprehend or accept that other people might like different things than you (gasp!). And there's tons of achievements that aren't the minuscule few outliers involving inordinate numbers of things. From time-to-time, I just open up the "nearing completion" tab and there's always a variety of things within easy completion distance.

It isn't really the freedom to take a break. It's the necessity of having to take them because there is so little to do.

theres nothing to do, if you dont want to do anything in the game. If you actually complete all the things that they implement and try all sorts of content, then it keeps you busy for thousands of hours
