It's hard. I store on them stuff that I think it would take too long to farm, so no crafted items or stuff from the MB.
I only have two and could honestly get by with one if I had to. If something is easy to get like bait, dyes, materia, or crafting materials, I just go get what I need when I need it. I mainly use retainers to store things that are a pain to get like potsherds, totems, relics, etc. I do agree there should be a better solution for the relic weapons.

Ive only ever had two, and between them there are 100 open spots. My saddlebag is 3/4 full, and my dresser is maybe 1/4 full. If something is easy to get/re-get im not storing it.
TBH, my 2 retainers hold old event furniture and items along with glam overflow, but they're super full even after I tossed all my old gear out at the start of DT. Also, both storage rooms are full for my house and apt since they also hold furnishings.
I'd be happy if we got a 3rd free retainer, but that'd never happen either way.

You can buy the glam only versions of the relic weapons and put it into your glam dresser.
chocobo saddle but also that need a boost x)
I kinda gave up and toss completed relics unless they're BiS or there's no replica... which I think I remember none of?
e/:
Also, when I moved servers I bought two extra retainers for one month, chucked all my unretrievable event furniture in there and then immediately cancelled them. Is it great? No, but it beats worrying about it.
Midcore is when you take a look at an Ultimate, nod along sagely to a guide and decide to do it when you get 12 months of uninterrupted vacation, which is to say: never.
