Sure, it's a live-service game, unfortunately, that doesn't change its history.

It's still an ancient PS2 game; built on the PS2 Devkit and ported to PC. They would need to effectively rebuild it from scratch to make it function like a modern game. It was designed for PS2 hardware and network capabilities and the dial-up internet of the time. You can't really compare it to something like WoW, which is only a few years younger but has been modernised much more over the years, because a lot changed in those few years and the games were developed in entirely different ways.

If we're talking about a new game, inspired by FFXI, obviously it would be updated in a lot of ways to remove some of the jank. But the jank just comes with the territory of a game like FFXI, and that definitely won't change. Luckily, the jank isn't so bad once you get used to how the game works and the game is good enough that it's easy to enjoy it despite certain things being unintuitive.

3rd party let you set custom keybinds these days, so it's possible to bind M to map lol. The one that always messes me up is hitting space to type in chat...
