Albert's name is wrong in the English localization

The name of the character that English-speaking players know as "Ardbert" is mistranslated.

His name in Japanese is アルバート (Arubāto), which is "Albert" written in Katakana.

In Heavenward, his English name is misspelled as "Arbert" which seems to be a misinterpretation of "ル" as an R rather than an L. (ル can be an R or L in English depending on the context, but in this case it's pretty obviously supposed to be an L)

In Shadowbringers his name is changed to "Ardbert", and one of his lines of dialogue is replaced with a retroactive justification for the change in the English version. This is strange because the new name is even less correct than before, as not only is the ル still wrong but there's now a D that came from nowhere.

It's been this way for several years, but hopefully it can still be corrected (:

Even if it was generated from a localisation error the EN community knows him as ardbert there is no reason to change it now

As a healer main in this game for nigh on 14 years all I can say is that I’m tired. My role has been eroded of complexity and expression for 3 expansions. I’ve watched the tanks do my role for me for 2 expansions and my feedback and critiques continue to fall on deaf ears.

I have no idea who modern healers are designed for but I know now it’s not me. This is the first expansion I’m truly considering dropping the healer role and not returning, so if that was the goal- congratulations I guess

Ardbert is a perfectly cromulent Kholusian hume name. This is not an error, just localisation.

L and R are the same sound in Japanese.
With Hepburn romanization (the de facto standard) there is no L in Japanese to English translations.

However I agree that アルバート would be more in line with the English Albert.
But of course they went with Ardbert and I think that's going to stay lol. Believe it or not, English usually supersedes Japanese in regards to spellings and translations for this game.

Who cares? Seriously, stop worrying about how they localized a name in the game. If they wanna call him Ardbert, it's fine. I, as an english player, don't and shouldn't concern myself with how they spelled it in Japanese. Lots of things in this game are localized, not just translated. The localization team understands and knows the nuisances of Japanese, this was a choice.

This is really interesting thanks for sharing. I think Albert would've been a lot better than Ardbert I always thought that name was weird and they were just picking a weird fantasy name for the game.

Arguments rarely sway the views of either people involved, but they change the minds of bystanders all the time.

Now un-subbed, pointless playing, paying and getting nothing out of it.

All of the warriors of darkness had "localized" source names (following Eorzean naming conventions) in HW in order to blend in that got changed in ShB when they went back to using their real names. Ardbert was Arbert, Renda-Rae was J'rhoomale, Branden was Blanhaerz, Nyelbert was Naillebert, and Lamitt was Lamimi. This wasn't a misspelling but a deliberate localization choice. Besides which, it's a fantasy game, having Arbert as a fantasy spelling is perfectly fine in a game with such characters as Ermegerhd and Fathard.

Didn't Yoshida, Starfox, and, Koji already note back during late ARR that in the majority of cases the English names are generally created first and the Japanese then localized from them?
