~18.8% of the world's population speaks English. If you narrow this to specifically people who interact with online games, the percentage becomes much higher.

~1.7% of the world's population speaks Japanese.

The live letters would double in length, are you sure you want that? I think the unofficial translations are just fine, personally.

Official translators would also need to keep on hand a glossary of things that were changed in the English localization so EN players don't get confused. Gods forbid they accidentally reveal something like Ardbert's real name. /s

I think it's less about cost and more about them not wanting to do six hour live letters every time.

just cut the useless livestream format and post a prerecorded video with translations. they don't interact with players in any meaningful way anyway so might as well stop pretending like they do.

But we had an official translator then we wouldn't get to see everyone flip out because someone translated "We unfortunately didn't have enough development time and resources our patch schedule to make a normal mode of Forked Tower" to "It costs too much money to make a normal mode so we didn't bother, lawl."

Like 45 minutes of it is about Japan-only concerts, there's no reason to translate any of that.

They're adding another concert to the tour you didn't even know about, it's coming to Nippon Budokan! You don't know where that is and you'll never go there in your life. Cool, right?

At this point just dump it and post a prerecorded video of intended points in every supported language

I wonder how many subs they might have failed to keep today because of a rushed unofficial translation and misrepresentation again of the unofficial translation.

Just gonna be frank here - if someone actually unsubs because of not having a formal translator for an LL...they're already at the point they're so jaded that they weren't going to remain subbed, anyway.
