I remember the devs saying they didn't like how people were locked out of the Diadem/Firmament stuff and wanted it to feel more community driven, but they are still actively punishing people who cannot be glued to their games and need to work.

The devs are obviously able to cap/timegate content, they do it with savage which is played by a small section of the player base so that it is not over and done with too quickly. So why not cap the content that is literally accessible to the entire game populace
Forums: "We want to have long form content to keep us entertained for longer periods of time"

    SE: Cosmic Exploration

Forums: " Why are you punishing people who can't play all day?"

    - and the wheel continues to turn.

Anyone who defends the flipfloping of these forums is a joke. SE can only farm L's at this point.

'longer periods of time" is not "play all day"
The contents we pay for monthly have to keep us entertained for the period we pay for, whatever the time we spend playing during that period.
Pointless grind with rewards gated with gambling, that's all we had on this patch. Is it worth the sub? I don't think so...
This is just Yoshi-P making fun of the playerbase: "XIV is not meant to be played 24/7, enjoy (our) other games", then they release this already-dead-in-2-weeks content...

Those are not as opposite as you pretend. I mean, we achieve to miss several steps in less than 12 hours. To me that a proof that the "long running part" is not well designed. Also, we were promised we could see every steps. People starting in a couple of month will see the zone already finished. If you want to make something long running, you have to leave the possibility for players to engage with it anytime down the line, not only in month after release.

    Sure,

But realistically it is quite impossible to account for several timezones, for several different activity levels, for several months all while sharing a cohesive progression check, and making sure no one misses out on any step.

I'd love to see a good example in any MMO that has achieved such a task while accomodating all of these variables. Do you have one or are we now just asking SE for the impossible?

You simply make the work required to reach each check-point long enough such that it doesn't get completed before you've made morning coffee. That is complicated in 14 due to the uneven population on different DCs - a problem SE created.

Scaling the goals to number of active players on the server can't be that hard, surely?

Doman enclave restoration. You start at 0, and through a weekly task get to see all the stages and see the enclave get slowly restored.
Just copy that at a bigger scale.

Domain was not a group effort it was based on individual progression. This is much more like Ishgard Restoration.

Ooh so close but that's not shared progression content serverwide.

Yeah, I can see how it can be a problem. But in that case don't promise the opposite, which they did. But there were solutions : locking the base evolution behind quests. Doma restoration did it. The only problem I see with that method is the whole howerboard thing. But make that the first step (it's currently the second) in an solo instancied tutorial and it's fixed.
