But as it stands now, the game is still at the base of a very tall marketing mountain. They need to compete with all games, not just a handful of other MMOs like XI did ten years ago.

I think I remember someone else making this argument. Claiming that Mortal Kombat would be the game that would destroy the market, including FFXIV.

Turns out it came and went, with the MMO genre still intact.

I had a feeling this was the reason. Because they were so embarrassed and humiliated the last time, especially by the Western Media, they don't want to lose face again.

As far as we have been told, no. It seems the press was free to record it, they just didn't.

Maybe it was all part of their viral marketing strategy? Like Yoshida said, this version was not fully optimized, they didn't feel it was worthy of an official release by them.

Instead they are depending on leaked footage as a way to spread it to the masses. That way maybe expectations will be somewhat tempered (lol) since this leaked un-optimized early build was not officially released by SE and thus will not be confused as an almost complete build (which I'm sure many of the general mass can easily mistaken it for).

Of course I could be entirely wrong, I'm just trying to guess what is going through their minds.
