Well, on the bright side. Besides peoples thoughts on how jump will get annoying, grass is the only thing people found worth flaming about. ARR seems like it will be a GREAT SUCCESS! VERY NICE!

I didn't care to go through all of this but something I wonder if anyone's considered... They're running this on lower settings most likely, maybe even a laptop. It's very well possible the grass here is just a low-res textured version. They're very well aware one of the selling points of this game is the graphics, why would they deliver such a thing like this without considering that first? Seeing as these are just supposed to be "screenshots" of the game's current phase and to show off what they've worked on so far I'm doubtful they'd intend to leave it like that.

Sadly, no they aren't "low settings". The grass/plants are actually just the same ones we have in the game now, just there's a lot more of them and for some reason they're scattered around in singles instead of bunched together in little patches like what we have now, adding to their eyesoreness. The reason it's not a "setting" is that if you look at it, it is a 2D bitmap, sometimes with another 2D bitmap perpendicular to it. So it's in xyz space but it's a 2D bitmap. There are no "settings" to improve the look of this bitmap. I think I'm correct in identifying it as a bitmap, but someone correct me if I'm wrong. It doesn't appear to be a texture, which could be sampled higher if it was enabled.I didn't care to go through all of this but something I wonder if anyone's considered... As for why they would deliver that it looking like that.. I can only speculate that as far as they identified the tradeoffs this was the best they could do at the time. I'm inferring that 3D grass/plants were out of the question.
Also to anyone that thinks this is going to be improved, here's why that's not going to happen. It's an art asset that's been in the game from the start. The art asset is final. If it was going to be a higher quality bitmap it would already be. If anything the "bitmap crossings" are less dense now than in 1.0. So it's not going to improve, it's always going to look that way. Unless they change it from xyz space to an xz point like in Xenoblade.
Also since they are fixed in xyz space they don't animate or move in the wind at all. An xz point bitmap that's camera oriented can animate smoothly and minimize the "flat" look, adding a lot of flair.
Xenoblade grass/plants don't look amazingly good, but I mean if they are really going to look that horrible in 2.0 like this footage shows I think they should really consider switching how they display these 2D bitmaps.

I won't deny the grass looks pretty bad. However I think some people are just taking it far too much out of proportion. I'm going to hold onto hope however what we're seeing isn't indeed a final product. That grass does seem out of place the way they've got it lined up now, but isn't something worth quitting over or throwing a tantrum over either.
EDIT: Something I remembered too, they're supposed to be making the game playable by even lower end PCs aren't they? Like laptops? Is it possible then that they're just displaying what it would look like on a lower-end system, but on a high-end PC the grass/plants/foliage will look much better and much more animated.
I do recall several games will do that, have lesser quality of some objects/textures for weaker systems. And for those with systems above average they'll improve textures or certain elements.

Some of this forum frenzy, is like, when someone makes one of those sarcastic threads (>.>) where everyone posts not getting the joke, and the replies are so obviously under the water, except that.. there was no sarcastic thread to begin with, and no one ever said they were upset or going to quit! It's like THE UNIVERSE spoke its frustration against 2.0 and the animals started doing a raindance to calm its wrath.
Or something like that.
Anyway:
Who's taking it out of proprortion by the way? lol. Well, before you blindly hope for better grass, what is your perspective on the OP suggestion?I won't deny the grass looks pretty bad. About low spec PCs, typically what you see there is a setting to adjust the amount of foilage, not the "quality". I'm pretty sure the image of the foilage is not a texture. Anyone care to weigh in on that? Gramul? If it IS a poly, it seems to be cut into that blocky shape already, and in that case no amount of settings or high spec pcs are going to change that mesh, if it is a mesh. And if it's a bitmap then no amount of settings are going to change the bitmap that is already saved to your hard drive. And ANYWAY, there's no need for such speculation since this is the same art asset used in 1.0. Take a look around 1.0 if you want to see how it looks. It doesn't animate now and it looks super blocky. The only difference is that it's rarely seen so conspicuously in 1.0 since it is generally bunched up into little bush patches where the flaws of it are minimized.
Check out how these plants and grass look in Xenoblade. Important distinction: don't imagine how FFXIV would look with this amount of grass, just how each piece would individually look in place of the jagged looking plants in the game.

Alright. Im gonna come out and say it because im tired of holding this in, but you people are acting absolutely ridiculous about this grass crap. The grass is fine. If you really think a game is gonna fail because of fricken grass, then you need to rethink what you are talking about. You people all begged for gameplay footage of FFXIV:ARR and when you get it you pick it apart because of grass?! Seriously?! This man has worked his butt off to make FFXIV:ARR the final fantasy game you all wanted it to be and you pick it apart for something stupid. This game has the most negative community ive ever seen and you all honestly are acting like little kids about this grass stuff. Its very simple, if you dont like the direction the game is going in, then quit and dont come back. Not a hard thing to do.

Why is legitimately complaining this hard about grass to the point where they will quit the game or announce its failure? Tell me their names and I will launch a full investigation.

I meant in general. It seems like everytime i read threads on this forum, no one can ever say anything positive and it just gets annoying after reading negative after negative after negative post on stupid stuff. If you dont like the game or the way its progressing then dont play it is all im saying.

Well duh.I meant in general. That's the whole reason the forums are here, so we can point out the problems with the game and help Square improve it.
The real problem is this stupid grass joke people are spamming everywhere while issues players actually care about are burried beneath.
