Regarding the end of the world, there is a big meteor in the sky that you can see wherever you are except for Gridania. Get through the storyline to find out more =P

One thing you will come to realize about FFXI and FFXIV is that you want to avoid almost any and all WoW references and lingo (for instance we do not whisper we /tell). The FF genre has developed a few terms of their own and most FF players poopoo WoW players and vice versa. Think if it like rival gangs lol

The CS has to do with the current storyline surrounding Dalamud, which, yes, is pretty world threatening, at least in terms of Eorzea. You can only experience this story before 2.0 starts.
