This is such a bizarre thread. The setting of the second half of Dawntrail is basically FFIX with different names. Yes we have Dagger; it's Real Sphene. There's more FFIX in Dawntrail than there is FFI (Warrior of Light repurposed as Elidibus + Chaos in the Omega raids; that's literally it) or FFII ("wild rose" references which are in basically every FF game + the name "Pandaemonium" being used for a completely different location) in the entire game.

You're also forgetting about Vivi in the Heavensward Hildibrand quests.

Most of the last arc is a pretty blatant ff9 reference. The three unsundered are the three angels of death causing chaos to replace the souls of the current world with those of the past. Metieon has the exact same motivation as Necron and the same goal.

    1) FFIX is highly controversial™ and the black sheep™ of the franchise and 2) it was a tremendous misconception to assume this was a FFIX expansion. People were really telling themselves VPR was an ode to Zidane when his job is already in the game and his weapon doesn't split into two.

...I'm not sure you know what game Final Fantasy IX is. It's been beloved for pretty much its entire life, barring some people who had kneejerk negative reactions going from the Dark And Serious VII and VIII to the very Disney-esque IX. It's one of the most broadly well-regarded games in the series across all regions; it's frequently ahead of XIV, with the largest poll to my knowledge being done in 2020 and putting IX at fourth, with XIV in fifth. (X, VII and VI were ahead of it.)

And Zidane actually does connect his weapons in FFIX; item synthesis lets you jam two of his daggers together to make a dual-bladed weapon, which is his other weapon style. Dissidia adapts this by having him do exactly what Viper does.

I'd recommend playing FFIX, since you don't seem to have any experience with it. It's a good game, you'll probably like it.

I've played it twice, actually. Though that assumption is not entirely unsound considering how many detractors of other FF games admitted to not even playing them. FFIX not appearing in other media as often as other FF games has always been a sore spot for you guys.

Unfortunately, Dissidia is its own canon and does not represent the gameplay of each individual FF game. Like, there's a composite WoL character for FFI and Y'shtola can wield Thyrus as a weapon alt. Synthesis is also an asspull since the dual weapons do not disconnect and none of them resemble their individual counterparts, nor does that feature play into the VPR weapons in XIV. It would be more logical to assume they were an ode to the judge weapons in FFXII, which do disconnect and happen to go nicely with the Law's Order Scouting set as you probably saw.

Regardless, I don't recall any mention of Yoshi saying there's a job connection. Though given his track record lately (whether he's been misconstrued or not) that would probably be for the best.

Considering the heavy influence of IX on Dawntrail you'd have to be a huge dummy not to draw the connection; and while Ivalician influence on XIV is undeniable, Dawntrail's had it as light as it's ever been. (Whether you personally like that is another matter).

The Western province in Shadowbringers (Kholusia) and it's city Eulmore gave me quite strong FFIX vibes. Hobgoblins, a colourful banner strewn castle, the music. And then at the gate town we see (spoiler about SHB gate town quest)
female versions of Zorn and Thorn appear, the red and blue jesters who compliment eachothers sentences with rhymes
. But also the viper class though I'm not that far in, I think is a joinable twinblade that Zidane uses. There's gear that looks like Vivi. Some minions. There's a few little things that come to mind, others might know more. I think I read somewhere Yoshida wants to respect FFIX though rather than take too much from it.

This game does have a tonne of nods to other games, including outside of the FF franchise. The flying whale, floating islands and sky pirates in the Sea of Clouds is a big love letter to Skies of Arcadia (legendary RPG from the Dreamcast)

Skies of Arcadia get ported to the GC. Which means it might get ported to the switch2. There are other references if you go the extra mile. The viper class first dual wielding reminds me of ethel from xenoblade Chronicles 3 then when they are combined it reminds me of commander Ashera also from xenoblade chronicles 3. yes the the lower half of Yak'tel reminds people of satori swamp from xenoblade chronicles 1 at night but the swamp looks better. The next two are more of a easter egg and probably not direct references. Those lovely towers in aumorot are just a step away from looking like Markers from Dead Space and finally the bold decision to hold a funeral in front of the "Government Sector". Who knows what is beyond those massive doors.....

To be quite honest, there's a LOT of six and nine dotted through the WHOLE of the game - and while sometimes it's a LITTLE STRETCH to pinpoint things about 9...

You have to recall that ALL GAMES in general reference each other.

    YoshiP doesn't hate 9.

YoshiP just likes to string us along LOVINGLY and let us think things until we solve the puzzle.
