Every weaponskill, spell and ability should use MP. Change my mind.

    Title.

MP is a resource that every combat job has access to. At FFXIV, MP is used to represent the Aether you use to cast some spell. Now, MP management is a mechanic that's used only by magic users, notoriously Disciples of Magic (aka Magic Ranged DPS and Healers), but Paladin and Dark Knight uses it.

But the story let us understand that physical skills uses aether to be made. For instance, Gunbreakers cartridges is filled with aether. Machinists uses Aether to power up their devices. Ninjas uses aether to do their Mudras. Dragoons uses the dragon's aether to empower their jumps. Monks uses aether to open their chakras.

MP is the perfect resource to represent the use of Aether to augment physical capabilities.

As for abilities, they're just spells and skills that's not tied to GCD. They do same thing as a spell/skill does. So there is no reason for them to be free. And it opens up for some mechanics that hurts MP instead of HP.

I mean, the game used to use TP, which was essentially MP for non-magic moves, but that system was removed I think around the time when Shadowbringers came out.

From ARR until SB (Storm Blood) we had TP as a resource that melee would use. Sprint also consumed TP. Astrologian used to have cards that would specifically heal TP, and caster DPS used to have skills to offer other people MP. At the introduction of SHB, they got rid of TP. They might as well reintroduce TP for what you're asking. However, it seems that the job specific gauges have taken over the spot of the TP gauge.

    Spells usually do use MP.

Abilities usually don't, and the game has become ability-centric, so you may have a point with that.

Weaponskills used to use TP. But TP was (in my experience) mostly irrelevant unless you did AoE for long periods of time, or received large buffs to Skill Speed, neither of which I noticed if I was in a good party that killed things fast, or without unusual circumstances, or using Sprint (which used up all your TP). In practice, TP was mostly annoying, at least until Stormblood with the abundance of TP-related role actions, but then it was just annoying the rare times it did become an issue.

What happens if you run out of MP completely? If everything requires MP you'll be stuck unable to do anything. In the cases where you have MP you'll mainly be concerned about your MP regen + Lucid being enough to keep you active during a fight, so basically the healer Piety situation. I've never found that very interesting personally.

I think I'd prefer if MP was only relevant for powerful skills because you can build a management game around that, like original DRK and BLM. It also helps if burst phases aren't on a set two minute timer and you have to think about when to burst vs when to hold.

If they would also introduce ways to gain "MP" back with some skills/abilities, they would create a real complex system and way to bolster each class complexity.
