FFXI was great, and more importantly memorable.

For all of its flaws (and there were several) I will always remember that game fondly. I don't know why XI fans hate XIV and XIV fans hate XI.

Why can't they both be good games that are held up by their own merits?

Because humans have to take polarizing sides on every issue.

"Its a game, get over it. Content is more important than your toon looking like you."

This is one of the most stupid things any mmo player has come out with customisation
is a very important aspect in any MMO you’re playing the game for more than a year you should be able to look different than the other thousands of people you’re playing with.
i played ffxi for a very long time and found this to be one of its biggest pit falls.

also ffxiv has a lot of potential the game is still a baby in mmo standards and has a hell of a long time to grow ffxi has been out for 10 years and was pretty basic when first released. FFxi in its day was a great MMO and has withstood the test of time very well considering that nothing ground breaking has really come and changed the way the game plays at its core (PS2 limitations).
The OP is right about all points he’s making combat was slow but made for wider use of each job i doubt you will see if released Thief’s using SATA in ffxiv if it came out just by how this game is just in battle design.
what I’m getting at is being all "No FFXI was teh greatest!!" is just being an idiot ffxi was far from a perfect game but was and is the best MMO i have ever played and hope ffxiv will in time beat it.

What made FFXI great was the competition (actually competing for limited resources), feeling of accomplishment, and community. We can only hope FFXIV can hope to bottle that magic FFXI had and pray for another 8 year run.
    Feeling of 'community'?

You mean the vulgar college-age kids in the Aery baiting one another for three hours while they did homework between windows?

Or was it perhaps the "I refuse to meripo with this bloke, he's in a rival hnmls /pcmd leave" that tickled your fancy.

You did mention a sense of accomplishment. I take it that you mean managing to fight off the boredom of camping Cerby every other day for a couple of years in order to get your token Algol, and finding creative ways to get around the bots your rivals were also using.

Please note I did not say that they alone were using, but that they were also using.

Exactly what sense of 'community' did you get from a bunch of drama queens pouring forth earsplitting cry 'n moan sessions all over the bloody servers? Precisely what sense of accomplishment should one glean from using a claimhack bot for years on end in order to supply their LS with items from a bunch of monsters that are, in the ultimate analysis, not difficult at all to defeat?

(>.> ) Rose-tinted glasses, indeed. Let me avail you of some information; those 'accomplishments' were, in honesty, not very impressive. They are made even less impressive by how you puff yourself, and the content, up and lord it over others who actually had the capacity to realize how pointless and dreary it was.

Whatever sense of community there was in the game, it most certainly did not come from the endgame structure.

Summoner, Red Mage, and Thief would stringently object on this topic, even to this very day.

Dark Knight, too, for a very long time 'til the Last Resort superbuff, and then Resolution.

I, too, greatly loved XI, but it was because of the art style, the greatswords, the engaging characters in the various storylines, and my personal circle of friends.

It was not because of the gameplay. That needed much work.

Well, Im not crying about anything. i just wanted to mention FFXI is also not that perfect, how people want to describe it here. So your "go play wow" is just so poor, i dont wont to play it and i never really played it. and times changed.

Im not flaming about FFXI. i love FFXI back then, but its not the holy grail.
so U should get over it, and not me.

    no reason for insulting me.

    bye bye

i agree with you both games can be good in their own way.

i just started this thread for showing the things which havent been solved very good in FFXI.
because all we read here in this forum is that FFXI is the best game ever. (well if i look at the ratings i see something other) but thats an other point.

i did not open this thread to say "FFXI sucks" no... its just for seeing the contras which we had in FFXI (just some examples). because i cant read it anymore.. that FFXI is the best mmorpg made ever. that it is not.

its the best MMO for the fans of FFXI (like us), but seeing it in a objective way its not perfect at all.
And we dont need an other FFXI for Final Fantasy XIV. i hope they can make something DIFFERENT. and thats the point.

you cant say something is less memorable which you are still playing. when you look back into the past and you say "wow that have been good hours of playing" well then you know its memorable.

FFXIV is.. especially with 2.0. in the very beginning.

and i dont hate FFXI. i love it also back then. but obviously you and others dont read the entire post.

I played XI for 6 years. It is the only MMO to date that has been able to keep me for so long, but the reason I stayed is because of the friends I met along the way - not because of the gameplay or anything. Sure, it was fun, especially when Campaign came out, but what I enjoyed more than anything was logging in and talking to friends while I just chilled in my moghouse until it was time to get stuff done.

Now, that being said, I did quit eventually because, yes, I got tired of the game. I do agree with Tonkra on most of the things he said, though they weren't exactly game-breaking problems for me. The problem is that even if FFXIV were "more like XI", it wouldn't be enough for the community at large, even the XI fans. I used to hope it would be more like XI but honestly FFXIV is completely turning into its own game right now and I'm happy for that.

Insulting people in the counter argument isn't going to change their minds. It will make them stick harder to their opinion regardless of whether or not it's right, and think less of your opinion simply because you insulted them. In essence, if you want to try and change someone's mind, come up with a well thought-out response and don't be a dick.
