The problem is that people then start saying crap like "this is FF" and "so-and-so isn't FF". I try to avoid such trains of thought, but you always have someone bring in some tedious aspect of XI, saying they want it in XIV because it's FF. At least be honest and say you like something rather than try to justify it by saying it feels FF.
Either way, I support the OP. The game had decent stories and I liked the races. Everything else...let's just say there's always a "but", just like all systems implemented in XI.
* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.

i have never played FFXI. and my opinion if it is that it sucks! I hope Square announces ffxi shutdown then ffxiv 2.0 comes out
FF11 was the best MMO. SE wishes that FF14 was half as good.
I too agree that FFXI was a terrible game locked onto a terrible console
Try playing FFXI now in Voidwatch one of the current endgame events your spaming TP moves every couple seconds.- slow and passive combat (BLM had to rest MP for hours, casting spells each 10 minutes. Melee jobs hit every 5 seconds and have to wait for their TP to finally get filled slowly) (now we have positioning stlyes, combos, spell combos, much faster regeneration etc)
Man those graphics suck.
It's just that so many of us have been playing ffxi for so many years that we have become accustomed to the bad graphics, the clunky interface and slow moving progress. There was an uproar (and to some extent there still is) about the streamlining of lvling and being able to pop and proc nm instead of camping and hoping your thf doesn't die so you dont loose your measly and mysterious th4.
It's the holy grail simply because ppl have become so accustomed to playing it and forget how much they used from other ff titles that they have become resistant to the change. That and alot of players do not remember how ffxi was when it was first released.
I still play ffxi, moreso than ffxiv these days and I have aspects I like from both. But the reason ffxi has my attn is the variety of content, alot of which is soloable for those of us who are not extremely hardcore do to rl obligations. I still have my ffxiv account, but when I log in I end up just crafting or sitting idle in uldah while im either in ffxi or skyrim. I no longer have a ls cause there is just simply nothing for me to do since I am not interested in farming a relic weapon. And to be honest I really am not interested in farming relics for others when there is nothing for me to gain from it at any point whatsoever.
So I personally wouldnt say holy grail, I would just say old and comfortable. But I also realize they are just 2 games made by 1 company so they each have their merits, something old schooler ffxi'rs arent always able to see and I am extremely excited about what ffxivARR will bring us. Who knows maybe it will be the new holy grail! ^^
