A really big amount of them![]()
The EU regional tournament they streamed yesterday.
Which has been in the semi finals to finals a consistent roster of: MNK, NIN, WHM, AST, SCH, PLD, with some WAR/DRK or RPR/SAM sprinkled over it.
Which is also incidentally what 90% of the high crystal games feel like on EU all the time as well.
Wait no dragoon supremacy? /s
Dragoon is good but it's not meta, surprisingly. I think people value their crowd control too much, and DRG's LB is a gimmick at that level, especially in LPs, unless you pair it with other jobs that ain't meta like DNC. But I'd be curious still to see how it fares with RPR or WAR.
What's... being communicated here?
The meta game at high level and tournament play. Always the same jobs and comps most of the time. Seems to mirror most of what I've seen in rankings above 1k to 1.5k crystal rating with extremely minor exceptions.
Now I'd be quite curious to see how it goes in the upcoming mirror events for NA and JP, and see if it explains why red ranged jobs are so underwhelming on our side on EU or if it's more universal and why the devs don't do anything about it.
I was mostly struck by the contrast with FL. I guess the significant differences in the nature of combat might explain it, plus most of the players aren't optimizing obviously. But on the rare occasions I drop in these days it's still very much a green/ranged meta, with DRK making a minor comeback. The meta game at high level and tournament play. Is it just an issue that, in the 5v5, ranged doesn't have enough dps/DR?

No, BRD, BLM, and RDM are still huge picks. The rest can just be underwhelming or part of niche comps.I was mostly struck by the contrast with FL. The finals of the above-mentioned tournament had a RDM present.
DPS is not a problem, it's mostly a matter of defense but also mobility for some, which is interconnected. Support jobs are meta in the current sustain/damage pressure meta, but you still want some red DPS jobs to seal the deal, so you'll take the sturdy ones that also do offer good or great CC options like MNK and NIN and SAM.
Pretty sure there was no BRD nor BLM past the quarter finals. Semi finals is where the meta teams were pitted against each other.
It's my mistake not to point it out above, but RDM and DNC aren't ranged DPS job stricto sensu. In fact even the system does consider them as hybrid jobs and uses them to balance between melee and range when matchmaking. There was a RDM player (Ritlas) that kept swapping between it and RPR yes. RDM can perform perfectly fine in the current meta because it offers the tools sought after (big CC options) and the defensives/mobility to back it up. Still, it was the only one though, and only played 50/50 by the player.
