FFXIV poor performance outlier on new Radeon 9070 XT cards!?

    Heya everyone ^_^/

So, the news is out on AMDs Radeon 9070 XT that many may be looking to upgrade to on PC, but unfortunately it seems that whilst it's providing great value for nearly every other game, for FFXIV in particular, it severely under performs

Is there any technical reason why FF might perform so poorly compared to other games or do you all think we can expect this to be some kind of limitation that will be patched out via drivers or game update?

I would be very interested in hearing an answer to this, too, since I'm currently intending to upgrade to the 9070XT.

Unfortunately, since the 9070XT isn't publically launched yet (coming tomorrow), Square Enix probably hasn't had the opportunity to run any diagnostic tests on it.

Adding some context to OP's screenshot: The 9070XT usually trades blows with the RTX 5070Ti in most other games, so seeing it inexplicably lose by 25% in FFXIV 1440p (30% on FFXIV 4k) is disheartening.

Echoing the concerns above and adding another source that shows a difference in FFXIV specifically. Pretty concerning as someone trying to build their first PC. I wasn't aware that AMD had significant differences in FFXIV before this.

Source: Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX 9070 XT review: midrange maestro

This review of the Sapphire Nitro+ shows more of a performance parity with the 9070XT not losing to the 5070 as above. BUT this is for the Nitro+ version of the card which usually retails a hundred or more above the base Pulse versions. So it took overclocking and other improvements to match the 5070 in FFXIV.

Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail tempers excitement for Radeon RX 9070 XT but doesn’t come close to spoiling proceedings.

haha, well, was hoping maybe someone at SQeenix might be lurking around that could shed some "ah yea that will be patched by us for sure" kind of reply. Let me have my hope okay xD lol

Yea it just coming out is fair of course, I'm hoping once SQenix has a chance to check it out it will be as simple as a patch or something, though that said, all the 3rd party reviewers (Gamers Nexus especially) are pretty trustworthy so I doubt we'll see better results from end users, unless and until of course, it is addressed by drivers or patch if at all possible.

In fairness, it's not that AMD has significant differences in FFXIV, as per GamersNexus this appears to be an outlier. The card itself seems very good value for pretty much most other games, just FF is somehow severely under performing >.<

If it was just a few percentage points vs other games, one might chalk it up to random little deviations based on what was on screen or whatever, but 25% - 30% lower seems wildly out of trend.

Fingers crossed it's only temporary, I was really hoping to upgrade to this too but FF is my main game so this would be a deal breaker >.<

The AMD drivers are hot garbage. I have to reinstall the 23.11. driver frequently because the actual drivers are broken for FFXIV on my rig and causing framedrops, stutters and so on. They have to get their s*ht done right.

That's peculiar, I've not had driver issues since I got my 7800XT, I did notice a slight issue in Windows when I ran certain frame rates with OBS running but I think that was due to OBS' being 60hz to FF's 144 causing desyncs on the polling which caused really bad stuttering, it always went away when I closed OBS. That was on 24.X drivers. I had an issue when I moved to Linux but that's because my 7800XT was just released when I got it so Ubuntu based distros didn't have drivers for it in their kernels, a little reading and user intervention fixed that.

They do not reply to us on the forums. Not unless there are hundreds of pages or it's a post complimenting a GM.

If you want SE to take it seriously, post it in the bug forum using the format pinned at the top https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/forums/632

If you follow the format and they accept the bug report, they will likely send you a mail in the game to say that they accepted the bug report. You might have to do it multiple times if you get the format wrong.
