I will give you this, the sidequests in the new zones for DT were actually well written and interesting. I was surprised how many had multiple stages and cutscenes associated. Sadly, most of those will be skipped over by folks.Personal preference. I did not enjoy the zones of the First and most of the story associated with them.
I enjoyed Ala Mhigo, but it was very bland, visually speaking, and Doma did not pique my interest at all. Plus, Ruby Sea was a nightmare to navigate.
Ishgard was actually quite interesting, given the whole context from the Calamity and the perpetual Winter, but it was equally bland in terms of visuals, and the history was fun until we go to Idylshire, downhill from there.
Sharlayan was just dull in all senses, Thavnair was interesting only when the Final Days hit it, and we were basically denied Garlemald for story purposes.
The base 3 are good, but they suffer from ARR syndrome where they are starter zones. Gridania is by far the worst of them.
I dunno. at the end of the day, it really is just personal preference and involvement. I enjoyed exploring and walking around Dawntrail zones and talking with NPCs and even doing brown quests.
I couldn't care less for it on the other expansions.
"The worst foe lies within the self."
I liked the music and visual appearance of the DT zones. For me, this made the weaknesses of the story less of an issue simply because I enjoyed wandering around. Contrast that to Garlemald and Coerthas; two areas I found unpleasant.
