You're not wrong but you're just looking at it from another angle. I think they don't care about making the game the best they can because there's no competition and all their players are already hooked because of in-game social networks. You're suggesting that it could be because they see no point of becoming the best because it's impossible. Regardless of the reason there's obviously very little competition between the MMOs because they are already entrenched and even significant amounts of innovation can't overcome high switching costs (on the part of the player). So ultimately they have no incentive to innovate or to make a good game.
