BIOS F7f (dated 8/7/2024) at start of issue
No changes made to BIOS other than resetting fan curves to go to higher speeds at lower temps. No adjustments at all to RAM timing or CPU clocks/frequencies/multipliers or voltages.

Machine was assembled during May 2024 and came online June 1 2024 (FF14 installed on 6/3/2024)
All drivers are direct from manufacturer, WHQL certified. No unnecessary items at startup )Edge/Chrome set to not run, no game loaders running, etc etc. Other high demand games on machine include FF7 Remake, Satisfactory, Fallout 4, Cyberpunk 2077 and others. ONLY FF14 is having this issue.

No issues since initial load when PC was built. Beginning around 2/16 game would allow login, and startup, and would randomly freeze (total motion and sound stop, dumped direct to desktop) at varying times. Was able to log right back in after crashes and resume, but unable to reliably run game. Error always pops up small white box and lists the faulting program. Listed programs ALWAYS lists either nvwgf2umx.dll or ffxivdx11.exe as the top most entry. Freezes occurred at random times, from 5 minutes to 90 minutes, to 2 hours, and anything in between. In game actions/activity at times of freeze were inconsistent. Sometimes standing in FC house, or in a leve, a guildhest, a dungeon, the MSQ roulette, fishing, no consistency to when. Sequence of diagnostics steps taken before contacting SE support is below.

Each step was followed by a full power off shutdown, 10 minute wait, then power back up. Normal process when going to play FF14 is boot up, check email using Firefox, close Firefox, launch FF14.

    1) Ran SFC and DISM from Admin level command prompt. No issues reported. After reboot issue still present
    2) Used Windows update to check for updates, including optional updates available. After all restarts and my reboot issue still present
    3) Removed GFX drivers (using add/remove, then DDU) Reinstalled from a fresh downloaded Game Ready Driver from nVidia website. After all restarts and my reboot, issue persists.
    4) Installed most current BIOS (ver F8b dated 12/4/2024) After restarts and my reboot, issue persists
    5) Using login launcher setFF14 to completely re-download the game files. After restart and my reboot issue still persists.

At this point (2/19/24) contacted SE tech support via chat. Representative said to try adjusting the resolution on game to see if issue alleviated. Reset resolution to 1920x1080 and changed from borderless windowed to fullscreen.

A 4 hour game session on 2/20 saw zero crashes.

On 2/21 game crashed out 3 times in 2 hours.

Late day 2/21 reached back out to SE support chat and was told to try a full uninstall and re-install of the game. Was also given the excuse of installing it on C drive (see comment below).

On 2/22 Tried another session without a re-install. Game ran for 2.5 hours before it crashed out again.

On 2/23 backed up the local stored directory as stated by SE in the My Documents, uninstalled game, manually deleted the folders, emptied the recycle bin, ran disk cleanup on both C and D drives. Full reboot performed, and game reinstalled using a fresh installer downloaded from games website.

On 2/24 game ran without issue for 4.5 hours before crashing out in the middle of a guildhest. Relaunched and game, lasted 10 minutes before next crash in the middle of a leve. Reloaded again, game lasted 30 minutes till crash in a MSQ roulette. Launched again to finish the run,. then closed down game.

First and third crashes on 2/24 listed the ffxivdx11.exe as the fault (data below) and the second was the dll file.

    2/24 ffxivdx11.exe faults (first line)
    1st crash: ffxivdx11.exe+446B7E
    3rd Crash: ffxivdx11.exe+3D340F

2/25 (hoping the Tues patch corrected the issue)
2 crashes within 2 hours. 1st crash was after 1:15 (75 minutes) of play, while I was using the market board, and the second about 45 minutes later while I was walking around in the ward my FC house is in. 1st crash was on the nv....dll file, and the second had no crash warning or error screen, just instant dump to desktop.

If any other games were causing crashes I would not hesitate to suspect the hardware is having an issue. However, only FF14 is crashing out, nothing else, even my other RTX enabled games, are having an issue. I do not know if there is something that happened with the patch that ran the Valentione event did anything, but after almost 8 solid months with zero issues I do wonder. The PC was essentially built specifically to properly run FF14 Dawntrail and provide a base that would run games for several years without needing upgrades. At startup, the system has only 63 running processes, all of which are required for basic operation of the OS. No auto-loaders or monitoring clients or for lack of a better term, TSRs are running. Only the Windows Security, Windows USB (drive ejector), GeForce app, Razer app (Naga mouse), and sound card control app run above the base OS services and processes.

I do realize that Intel current gen CPUs had an issue with their microcode, and while it mainly affected i9 chips, i7s' was also affected. The BIOS installed in august had the microcode update to correct this. I did find out there was one further release of the F7 BIOS that I did not have, but it was included in the F8 BIOS release that was installed in my diagnostic steps.

Also as a related aside, support and the program Devs need to be on the same page, as they contradict each other. The games installer instructions directly point out you can install the game on a different drive other than the OS drive, but your support people say that can cause problems. So which is it? I dislike it when companies purposely built in a scape goat loop. I am providing all of this information to be as transparent as possible to try and find a solution.

FF14 seems to not like being installed on a non-OS drive, and can have a chance of crashing or having other issues.
Try installing on the C drive.

Also your Intel i7-14700K, while having an official TDP of 125 watts, is well known to be able to hit up to over 250 watts during all core loads in boost and on some platforms can draw nearing 400 watts.
The Noctua NH-D15 can happily handle the 125 watts, but may become saturated when over 250 watts in heat is pumped into it.
Try running Hardware Monitor in the background and graph the package wattage and temperatures for the CPU during gaming, to see if that may be an issue.

    Reply and Update

    Thanks for the reply.

I am aware of the TDP and thermal issues with the 14th Gen, which is why I put 4 140mm case fans, the NH-D15 and the better thermal compound on the unit, as well as making the fan curves more aggressive (both the CPU and case ones, forgot to mention that).

The CPU while running never gets above 50% load, but I'll put HW Monitor on it and see, as Task manager doesn't report CPU, only GPU temps. My personal belief is they didn't (or were not able to) fully test the impact of the recent changes made as it applies to the GFX system. All of the failures thus far not citing the game executable have been GFX related files, an only being within the month of Feb it was if anything a small oversight with not a large impact base. I do have a somewhat better than average understanding of the immense amount of work that goes into these things and testing is difficult.

The only thing I can say about the install location isn't very polite but, we are no longer in the late 1980's and early 90's. If the software can have potential serious repercussions if not on the system drive,. then maybe they shouldn't give you the option to install elsewhere, but that is of course an opinion born of someone with a range of good and bad experiences dating back to the 286/386 days..

My OS drive is reserved for the OS and such software that is still too stupid to understand we are in the 21st century. I do not have enough free space on that drive (as I keep them smaller than other drives) to do a full install of the game there. I keep it smaller so I don't run into a 'well I could put it there' syndrome.

I will be reaching back out to SE chat today. I shouldn't have to gimp my pc that was built for Dawntrail in order to play the game. And again, that none of my other games are having this issue is the biggest indicator to me it's something with FF14 sadly.

I do have some updates though after a little more playing around.

ON 2/26 Tried a new tact. Opened the nVidia GeForce app and had it 'optimize' the gfx settings for FF14 (as a test, I knew it would crash) and here are the results

Login + 10 minutes: Crash out while walking around in Kugane. Failed at d3d11.dll+17106B and ffxiv_dx11.exe+3CF9EA

Logged back in and reset some settings back.
Crash in less than 5 minutes on ffxiv_d11.exe+1037BCC

Logged back in, and set GFX to 'Highesktop'
Lasted 40 minutes before crash, was in Fannow working on society quests, direct crash, no error

Logged back in, locked the GFX to 60FPS max.
Crash in under 15 minutes, still in Fannow, crash out on nvgpucomp64.dll+1889372

I thank you for your suggestions and I'll try and nail down better data on the CPU temps. I do know the fan speeds were significantly less when I locked the game to 60 FPS in todays tets.

    Update with logging

Ran a test today (2/27) while running and logging with HWInfo.
Session lasted 1.5 hours before crash, no errors given, no white box, stright dump to desktop.

Multiple things done. MSQ, Leves, Guidhests, Crafting.

For the entire session HWInfo and Task manager were running.
    CPU Package temps Min:30 Max:70 Avg:47
    CPU Core Temp Min:20 Max:65 Avg:34
    Package Power: Min:4.3 Max:111.7 Avg:40.8
    GPU Temps Min:32 Max:51.3 Avg:47.5
    GPU Power Min:7.5 Max:123.6 Avg:48

Task Manager never went about 21% CPU utilization for the entire session.
This is still with the GFX on a preset with a 60FPS limit set

    Hello,

BIOS F7 was the Intel Fix regarding theier CPU degration issue. How long did you have these BIOS installed? If you ran the CPU for long time alreay, it is possibile, it is alreaedy damaged and needs to change under warranty if possible. BIOS update won't fix if the CPU is already damaged.

You should still try a clean boot, maybe Razer Software interefere with the ffxiv client. Disable all UI overlays ( Steam, especially Discord).

I installed the F7 bios about 1 week after it(variant f) released (so about 8/15/2024). Now, there was one later version, version g which is dated as Sept 27,2024 and that was the final F7. I have F7F which had all but the very final microcode revision in it (0x12B). Gigabytes notes, few as they are, state the 12B merely encompasses the previous revisions which I have an added in the infamous 'Intel Default settings'. But my f variant supposedly had both the elevated voltage request issue and the eTVB algorithim issues in it.

According to the Intel CPU tester, it is fine (although I know that doesn't mean much). The machine was put together in May of 24, and came online around June 1st of '24, so it was up and running for 10 weeks before I put that BIOS in. But again, FF14 is the ONLY software crashing. nothing else is doing this.

I am a PC install, not steam, no steam overlay (and no Steam processes are running) and Discord 8is off, and not running either, and it's overlay is disabled anyways. The morons at Razer has essentially made it so I can't remove their software or I loses all buttons except left, right and the wheel, as well as the higher DPIs. I would not even have the Synapse in the system if it wasn't needed to make the mouse work.

All of my sessions I have used of this problem testing, and in general, are all clean boots from 'off'. No hibernation, no sleep, no fast boot. I power the machine on, log on, check my email, close the browser (firefox, no chrome, and Edge isn't running in background) and then I load up FF14.

I have been recently getting 'better' play times, but it miserable, having to run the resolution down to potato level, turn off all advanced features, essentially negating the entire RTX card, the game could run off the CPU graphics the settings are so low, and it still crashes, and now hasn't even been kind enough to give me the little white window with what actually failed.

And again, despite all the other games I play with no issues with the CPU or GFX, and are run at high/ultra settings, only FF14 is crashing, and only since the middle of Feb. Apologies for any perceived anger, it's just hard not being able to enjopy the game.

    Greetings Adventurer!

We would like to assist with your concern. Please try the following to see if they help:
    - Update and reinstall the drivers for your graphics card and sound drivers (if applicable).
    - Please be sure that Final Fantasy XIV is installed to the C: Drive. We understand that you have been instructed this step already, however, doing so could alleviate the issues you are experiencing.
    - Please be sure to disable or remove any overlays (Discord, Steam, NVIDIA etc.) as they may interfere with startup.
    - Make sure that the Windows OS is fully updated.
    - It seems you have two graphics cards. Try disabling the onboard graphics so that only the dedicated video card is being used.

If you do not see an improvement, please feel free to respond to this thread for further troubleshooting.

Thank you for contacting the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

Please don't misconstrue this, I mean no personal attack, but this is frustrating Why do people not READ?

The GFX drivers were updated, and are the most current. THe old drivers were removed from add/remove, then DDU'ed, then a full restart, then a reinstall with a fresh download using the clean install just to be safe. No changes were observed in behavior.

MAKE A DECISION. The install instructions with the installer DO NOT state you must install the game on C, yet you are saying you need to. Make up your minds. We are no longer in the 1980s', where TSRs and all that **ap were an Issue. This setup of the game on a drive other than C has worked since I installed the game over 10 YEARS ago. Every PC I have built, every PC I have run this on this has not been an issue. I also cannot install the game on C, as it requires more space than my C drive has free. I would have to completely rebuild the entire machine (to restructure the drives, and thus have to reload everything to do this, and that I believe is a bit of an ask to make.

    - I have as mentioned in a previous post, ensured no overlays are running. I have gone so far as to not even load up Discord at boot. It never did anyways, but used to talk to my friends while playing (Discords interface was on my 2nd monitor). But since starting this whole process I have not even loaded it up (resulting in more than 1 actual phone call from my friends to check on my mental health since I wasn't online). I do not load Steam unless running a steam game, and FF14 was loaded as a pure PC game, not a steam version. Th NVidia control panel is running in the background, but all overlays are disabled.

    - Windows was updated, with optional downloads, as the 2nd item I tried back in Feb. I declined the preview updates. In going through the list of update history, The only thing installed around the time of the issue was KB5051987 from 2/11/2025 However the only released information about it was updates to Roblox (on ARM systems), Open Secure Shell issues, and Citrix issues. Since that manual check the system continues to get it's daily Defender update without issue.

I have never had an issue with the onboard graphics, it has nothing plugged into it, and never has. While I seriously doubt this is the issue I will BIOS disable it and see if there are any changes.

In my continued attempts to narrow this down I am essentially out of things to do. I am now running this thing like it's on a potato, little more better than old 16 bit graphics if you ask me. I keep getting asked to do things I cannot (move the game to C, revert to DX9) and suggestions that well meant, but show little use of critical thinking. When a game has run fine for 10 years, and has been running fine on a new machine purpose built for it for 8, then suddenly develops an issue, everyone says it's the PC's fault, oh it can't be the game.....

Nothing else is having issues, no other game is crashing, and I have several that just as, if not more, power and resource hungry and they run flawlessly. I have provided logs, detailed descriptions of steps taken, even provided the frackin byte offsets of the failing files, and till everyone keeps saying the game doesn't have issues.

I just want to be able to play again without worrying about crashing out in the middle of a dungeon, or raid, or Trial. I want to be able to play the game and be able to talk to my friends and FC members again. I want to know that spending close to 3 grand on a machine wasn't a total waste of money. I may not be a top tier raider, I may not make server/center/world firsts, I may not be BIS on all my toons and classes (yet) but none of that matters if I can't even play the game.

I will go and make change in my BIOS to ensure the onboard GFX is not being used (even though that is it default behavior) I have little hope that this will work, but I will try it.

Basically, a "cookie-cutter" response that is normal in the Tech Support industry.
So, don't worry that it may seem like a "Didn't read yours posts" thing.

I just went through your installed program list and saw:
    • Infatica P2B Network

Did you "willingly" install that or use it?

If not, that is a questionably/borderline PUP, that in a very basic sense uses your PC and network connection to route business data traffic through residential connections as a proxy service.
Sorta turns your PC into a IP scrubbing node so possible "bad guys" can get around filters and hide from scrapers, or "good guys" who pay Infatia for the service (they charge starting at $360 a month for 100GB of data, I don't guess they pay a cut of that to you for suppling that )
Unless you actively manage it, it's not gonna be throttling that data or work load.
If you didn't willingly install it, it might have been bundled in some installer of fringe "freeware" software, or part of a malware payload.

    Yes I know it's there.

I have it's outbound traffic blocked at my firewall. I will have to go back and check, but I do believe it was installed by a program I did install.
