They explained that the characters in the story may change depending on MSQ progress.

If a new player does this who is still in ARR, then it makes sense for them to appear. However, the characters may change depending on the story progression.

Squint and you'll also see that Thancred is wearing a certain necklace that raises some questions.

I wonder if the artist was given the in-game model from ARR as a reference.
