What is the purpose of the three continents?

I've played for a bit, and I'm confused as to the real purposes of the three continents?

If I started in Giradan and wanted to level in Ul'dah, would I still get the overall quests or am I committed to Giradan?

Do I also walk to each continent or can I teleport? When I try to teleport it gives me an error message prevent me to do so

I suppose you mean gridania. Your main scenario quests are bound to gridania, while instead grand company quests are bound to the grand company you'll choose. Sidequests then are free to everyone

to teleport, you have to have actually visited the city. You can't just teleport from Grid to Uldah without having been in Uldah first.

Variety and to spread people out, although it's failing in the latter purpose. It's clear the game would be boring if there was only one city or the cities weren't so different in culture and design.

Every city has different sidequests, but all 3 main scenario quests send you to Ul'dah at level 20. Every region around a city has levequest camps and roaming enemies of any level you could want, so for leveling it doesn't technically matter. However, Ul'dah is where players most often hang out, so if you're looking to find a party for leveling, a linkshell, or anything, go there.

Travelling between the cities themselves is easy, just go to the airship dock and buy a ticket. You'll then enter the loading area and automatically board the next airship that arrives. After a loading and unloading cutscene, you'll be in your destination city's airship dock. To leave the boarding area, talk to the NPC on the right-hand side of the exit gates. For the locations of the docks, look at the airship section on this page. That page also has information on all the various modes of travel.

    Hope that helps!

Once you get far enough in the main scenario no matter where you started it will send you to Ul'dah.

If you level more than one class you will end up visiting all 3 cities on and off for class quests and some of the grand company quests will make you travel all over the place to view cutscenes.

You can walk, get someone to teleport you or take the airship. Once you interact with the cities crystal you can then teleport to it yourself.

Gridania, Ul'Dah and Limsa Liminsa are three possible places to appear. They're not starting zones like in other mmos (they work like 3 major cities). Don't worry and go with the flow.

The first part of the game is in your home city (the one you first log in inside). At level 20, your main story will lead you to Ul'dah, and for the third part (the Grand Company quests) you will be traveling all over the world, in Limsa, Grid, and Ul'dah.

*puts nickpicky glasses on* And there's only one content, Aldenard - and the island of Vylbrand.

For now there aren't many questlines to do... everything is a bit more global. In 2.0 there will be more content per area.

They made three starter area's so everyone could complain about how everyone is in U'ldah.
