Thematic issues. Why all the sci fi.

In an expansion with a brand new continent full of ancient traditions, monsters and ruins to explore... Why do the developers of this game keep derailing into scifi and rendering the games obviously medieval fantasy jobs more ridiculous?

There is so much that can be explored mystically and lorewise in the cultures they are referencing but no. Because robots.

Honestly they may as well introduce storm trooper and jedi knight as jobs now.

The entire amazon rainforest was shoved into a single dungeon. We had ONE ancient bird trial and then right into sphene and robots. The next trial is more robots.

I mean, I know the game had theming issues before this for sure but it's just childish at this point to pretend Limsa Lominsa is still sailing a wooden ship armada with black powder cannons like it has any relevance in a world with gundams and lasers.

I was just hoping Dawntrail would be less of that and more a return to normalcy in the world.

And people making excuses for this are always "Oh but its rare technology, an exception."

NO

exceptions only work when they are actual exceptions. At this point scifi is the norm and I guess the three starter cities are just the most oblivious, ignorant, and maladapted societies on the planet.

What an irony then, that it was our nations that conquered the rest of the world (via diplomatic alliances or violence) while they (the rest of the world) were zooming around in the space age.

Because sci-fi is cool and has always been part of the franchise. I'm happy if we have a bit of everything, and I'm always sad when people that don't like sci-fi always come to scream at me for enjoying it. The sci-fi plots (origenics/everkeep) is one of the things I liked with Danwtrail.

My secret wish for 7.0 before we got Danwtrail announced was to get to another planet now that we seem to travel through space, and restart a new storyline and arc there with brand new things, but I knew it was just a pipe dream for me, and it would piss all the usual complainers about sci-fi, even though it's always been there since 1.0 with Garlemald and Allag...

Edit: actually I was envisioning finding one/new colonies from Etheirys, likely descendants from Allagan spaceships, since Allag was a spacefaring civilization after all. We would have had the leeway of a full, brand new world to discover, fresh new things, and not be burdened by trying to one up everything that came before in the previous arc...

Yeah, this sums it up. But just adding "cool" stuff to games without thought to what it does to the larger picture is not a good idea. If you actually zoom out and consider the implications of what gets introduced into the game you realize it doesn't make sense at all anymore. And it is a shame.

For the person that mentioned the allagans, at least the theming for the allagan's was ancient magical technology. We are down to generic space suits and starbucks coffee cups at this point. There is a reason most games DON'T do this. And its because its not good game design, it takes you out of it and doesn't make you take the game seriously. Even some other FFs manage to blend things better. Cloud's sword and outfit in FF7 looked modern. In this game we are getting gear that is easily 1000s of years apart thematically all the time.

And its because its not good game design, it takes you out of it and doesn't make you take the game seriously. Even some other FFs manage to blend things better. Cloud's sword and outfit in FF7 looked modern. In this game we are getting gear that is easily 1000s of years apart thematically all the time.

It makes sense that a society that literally lived and developed in their own safe bubble for centuries have an entirely different lifestyle that doesn't mesh with the rest of the world at all. Even if you don't like it.

It doesn't make sense when said society is friendly and yet people keep choosing to live in their backwards ways instead of advancing technologically with the rest of the world. To this day there are still people training to use muskets in Limsa when obviously superior technology and guns are widely available.

And we have Turali people developing steam trains when they have the people of solution 9 flying carriers despite people moving between the two places at will. ANY rational person would be like. You know what? Maybe we should be working on that.

But nah, they'll spend the next 10 years ignoring all the advancements in mobility in front of their faces to keep riding buffalo and making crude locomotives.

And yet somehow............... We are going to go to other worlds to developing them and restart life. But nobody is developing our own? Like hello?

The Allagan Empire existed, you know. Magitek is there too. Since ARR, even. Just because you'd like to act like Etheirys is by default a medieval setting doesn't make that statement true.

Agreed. I felt this way about Solution 9, but this Cosmic Exploration stuff has taken it even further. The content isn't even out yet and I already resent it from the pictures alone. I'm very concerned about the artistic direction the game has been going in lately.

I knew someone would respond with this weak, bad faith defence. Garlean magitek and Allagan technology/architecture have unique science-fantasy aesthetics which fit into FFXIV's world well. Both are a far cry from anything we've been seeing in Dawntrail.

I feel like every time something in this game is "ancient mysterious" it's just a lack of lore. Although I am not happy with the DT lore overall, at least electrope has some substance to it.

This will surprise you, but this is basically the state of the real life earth and a very accurate representation. Societies do not suddenly all advance to the same technology mostly because of politics, education, money and sometimes because tribes like to stay away from advanced society because that's what they chose to do. Some Eorzeans aren't even capable of reading and struggle making their daily bread.

Fair. S9 aesthetics is clearly service for a certain group of people who will buy overpriced cash shop knit hats.

The world is nothing like this. When two societies interact things change for both of them. Pretty much everyone has adopted cell phones and internet at this point. And of all things, transportation and weaponry are the biggest and fastest changes. You don't see any nation sailing galleons do you? Cars have been adopted universally, same with airplanes.

EVERYONE has moved on to guns.

This is all inevitable, because things, whether old or new cost money, and a government can't in good conscience keep investing its resources into obsolete technology so they can be conquered on a whim. As soon as new weapons are introduced changes come in fast and furious.
