I question why they don't just pull from the sci-fi designs of previous Final Fantasy games. Like we already have established places like Zanarkand and Esthar to draw upon. Those cities both had sci-fi aesthetics but still had that high fantasy feeling about them. Give us our bubbly and shiny Fantasy Frutiger Aero cities back!

In a way, Garlemald is sci fi with their mechs and machines. Omega raids in stormblood are heavily sci fi, Alexander raids are sci fi, travelling to Elpis, the tech of Old Sharlyan are both sci fi. This game has had sci fi themes for a long while.

Not all of them. The game Alexandria is based on, FFIX, had this exact sort of jump from fantasy to sci-fi when going from Gaia to Terra. Terra was a completely alien landscape. The art style was the same, but it has that same jarring aspect of wrongness. It was also a civilization of advanced technology. There were just limitations to really showing this fully back on the PS1.

Alexandria is the same. It's a bit like a IX world where Gaia and Terra fused like they were supposed to and Gaia got upgraded with Terran technology. Coming from Etheirys, it's alien and foreign and technologically advanced. So putting that in a modern perspective, that correlates to something more like cyperpunk to our standards now. And graphics today allow this difference to be accented a lot more.

Once again, these are obviously not the same. Stop trying to gaslight us.

I feel like "why all the scifi" is disingenuous, when most of the last two expansions are explicitly not sci fi. They are thematic juxtapositions to what's going on. The furthest modern dawntrail gets is early industrial you go into a city in what is essentially brazil that looks like ancient central American architecture. The future segment is quite literally warped in from another dimension and isolated to that space entirely. I think what a lot of people have issue with is aesthetics on characters, they don't like people being able to look ways that do not fit their idea of a fantasy. And the only solace i can offer you is, pretend it doesn't exist? This is a game that has given you increasingly modern clothes since storm blood, emotes too. Had a crossover with nier, had a mount that was a car canonically built by a dude in universe since that point. It clear you have been ignoring all that prior , what's the issue now? The idea of fantasy that you all had died , in heavenward. There was a bit of an illusion that still existed because Shadowbringers takes place on a shard that is *less* technologically advanced than the source by virtue of an apocalypse. Wait that's not true, they have advanced engineering and built a giant modern looking freight elevator that's key to the narrative.

Edit: Sorry i need to mention this, there was an anime crossover back in heavensward that gave you sentai armor.

I'm not saying im pleased with every aesthetic choice they have made ever ( though if i'm being honest i've been more pleased as of late than not ) but to suggest that the fantasy in the game is lost when most armor that comes out still appeals to the fantasy , is baffling to me. It really seems like you all just don't like other player characters looking a way

You can make all the excuses for a multi million dollar company all you want, but I still think its a copout in a FF game to just shove things in that we see daily instead of doing what they did in past games. Esp since you are avoiding my direct criticism that it feels lazy because it feels like the "artist" they used just drew his gpu instead of being an actual creative and doing something more unique. A few small things, like a lamp or a stove, here and there is fine, but an entire city that looks like my PC is just incredibly lazy design that, like I said before, anyone can fart out. I even said before the expac released that the juxtaposition of a tribal like culture next to cyberpunk 2077 was going to be a hard thing to pull off, and they didn't pull it off at all. Not from a visual pov, not from a writing pov and even with suspension of disbelief, not from a logical pov. The big difference between FFIX and DT is the writers took a lot more care in IX to make it make sense and to make it look like something much more fantastical than a 2000ce PC or a ps2. I am sure if the Terran tech was just a cordless phone, a fax machine and an ipod, ppl would have have the same wtf reaction.

We used to hold SE to a higher standard and we should again, instead of just incessently making excuses for them.

Why would you expect different cultures to look the same? Are you mad that Thavnair doesn't look like Limsa?

I think magitech reaper is cherry picking tbh
Let's not ignore ruby, diamond, emerald, sapphire and all the ultimate weapon clones
Multiple Castrums,Soul extraction facilities and the list goes on with Sci fi themes
