Lets not forget that the shit housing we have in FFXIV is mostly the fault of the players and their wishes to "improve" it.

I was opposed to the lotto system from day 1, so I can't help but feel some schadenfreude about how it's universally disliked nowadays. Anyway, conceptual blog posts are meaningless so I'll wait to see how the WoW housing turns out before I say anything about it. Not gonna automatically assume this will be "better" than XIV's system. WoW devs have a lot of mistakes under their belt.
Its not only the Lottery. Everthing related to housing be it cheaper and more affordable plots in general, private housing, the demo timer, placard clicking etc. were wishes from the players. Its pure comedy that everyone blames square for the shitshow we have now when the sole reason of the current housing system is the dumbness of the playerbase. The only thing we needed back then was the patience to get new wards / servers.I was opposed to the lotto system from day 1, so I can't help but feel some schadenfreude about how it's universally disliked nowadays. Honestly much needed jab at FFXIV. The housing system sucks and needs to be reworked (It won't). This game is in desperate need of strong competition so I hope WoW's housing does well and maybe even poaches some players.
It's nothing new that FFXIV could do housing better. Every other MMORPG with houses has had unlimited, even before FFXIV existed.
The main reason for it being "limited" that has any reason behind it is because each "ward" is a separate zone server and it means adding additional servers and UI to support it if they want to add more.
But that doesn't explain the "limited" apartment rooms or not having "instanced wards" of some form. While I understand that these are contained in zones as well, when the max number of players is reached it simply prevents you entering - because this has actually happened before. In most cases this limit is not reached unless the servers are extremely busy or it's a very RP and housing-centric world like Balmung and I rarely had trouble entering there either.
It's just really strange that they failed to fix this problem in 12 years. Even someone with no programming experience could google how to code and figure it out in that time - a fraction of that time, actually.
The lottery isn't the problem, if we didn't have that we would have an even worse problem. It was obvious, it was also a bandaid for an amputated wound. The actual problem is the system itself and we can't escape that without changing the core. Before you could spend hours upon hours banging your head on a placard, now you just pray. Both suck, the non-lottery system sucks more (assuming our core remains the same).I was opposed to the lotto system from day 1, so I can't help but feel some schadenfreude about how it's universally disliked nowadays. Considering the things that people are doing with plugins these days which the recent Blacklist System highlighted I'm sure a "house claiming" one would exist which make anyone not using plugins chance flat zero to get the house without lottery.I was opposed to the lotto system from day 1, so I can't help but feel some schadenfreude about how it's universally disliked nowadays. DAoC and LotRO have limited housing as well, but they come with upkeep costs. The former even comes along with a subscription requirement to have access to it in the first place. It's nothing new that FFXIV could do housing better. I remember the Garrisons promised at Blizzcon. I cry over the Garrisons provided in Warlords of Draenor.
I have little confidence that the housing system will end up as good as players are expecting. I wasn't the only one to add a comment on the blog post expressing skepticism.
But at least WoW players should be able to say they have a house once the system is implemented and they won't have to change what server they're playing on to do it.
Except the ward system is the underlying problem and it was SE's decision to create it as it works. The things that players suggested were to address the built-in flaws the ward system has and that SE ignored. Its not only the Lottery. No paying customer should be told they will need to wait 2-3 years for additional hardware to be added so they can get access to a game feature that other players already have.
So yes, in this case it's absolutely SE's fault. If they had planned ward design and expansion of hardware to hold the wards effectively in the first place there never would have been a need for demolition, timers, placard clicking, lotteries, etc.
Unfortunately, I don't believe they think it's a problem to begin with given how many times they've talked up the neighborhood feel. Now it could just be PR speak and all that, but does feel like a someone desperately clinging to an idea they liked that just doesn't work and refusing to acknowledge it.
