    ffxiv_dx11.exe crashes

Hello, recently while playing FFXIV, I've been experiencing random crashes during routine in-game activities, whether doing a FATE, an alliance raid, or a levequest. The following message appears: "An unexpected error has occurred. Exiting FINAL FANTASY XIV. Date of the error" and some codes below.

This is the only game where I have this kind of issue.

It happens every 2-3 days without any specific pattern, but last week it even caused a BSOD (a blue screen of death), and I would really like to find a solution to the problem.

Here's a list of things I've already tried:

1- Disabled the XMP Profile of my memory

2- Reinstalled/repaired the game (Please don’t ask me to do this again, it’s over 100 GB to download)
EDIT: Got an BSOD, reinstalling the game.

3- Switched between fullscreen and borderless windowed modes and vice-versa

4- Disabled overlays for every program I use

5- Updated my GPU driver (at the time I did this, a new update might have come out, but the crashes were happening before)

6- Installed the game on the C:/ drive

7- Lowered my graphics settings (I believe my computer specs easily meet the game’s minimum requirements)

8- Played the game without running any other applications alongside it (which again feels absurd to me, as I enjoy chatting with my friends on Discord, and they don’t play Final Fantasy)

9- Performed a safeboot and played the game afterward

10- Aligned my monitor framerate to the game framerate (VSync) through game and GPU configuration (Nvidia Control Panel), 75 fps.
Changed the resolution to 60 fps, got a BSOD.

    11- Disabled Full Screen Optimizations.

None of this worked. I am accepting new ideas, system configuration below:

I was getting this error a lot too and one thing that I think worked for me was changing the screen resolution. I changed it to 50hz, both in game and my actual monitor and used Nvidia's control panel to tell the game to also use that setting. Now the only time I get that error is if I'm alt-tabbing to other windows a lot.

    Greetings Adventurer!

We would like to assist with your concern. Please try the following to see if they help:
    - Try switching to DirectX 9 by selecting the ‘Config’ button on the launcher.
    - Update and reinstall the drivers for your graphics card and sound drivers (If you have not done this already as of 01/30/2025).
    - Perform a clean boot by opening the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything.
    - Make sure that the Windows OS is fully updated.
    - Install game on different drive to see if you receive the same error.
    - Reinstall game once more after doing the steps above.

If you do not see an improvement, please feel free to respond to this thread for further troubleshooting.

Thank you for contacting the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

What has worked for me in the past is slightly underclocking my GPU. For some reason, overclocks (even factory) have been the cause of crashes in XIV.

My GPU is not overclocked (i think), there is any means to check it ? And it's feels strange to underclock my hardware for FFXIV runs "smoothly", but still trying anything to solve it, it's playable but annoying =/

update I give up, i tried everything and there is no apparent solution or official help. Ty Darkstride and fulululu for your help.

Thank you for posting in the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

We apologize for any inconvenience experienced when trying to play Final Fantasy XIV. If you would like to continue to try and troubleshoot the issue, please try the following:
    - Switch between full screen and borderless windowed modes.
    - Please try adjusting/lowering the resolution.
    - Please try running the game as an administrator.
    - Please be sure to disable or remove any overlays (Discord, Steam, NVIDIA etc.) as they may interfere with startup.

Disable Full Screen Optimizations. To disable this, please find the "ffxiv_dx11.exe" and right click it and select properties. Then under the compatibility tab there will be a check box labeled "Disable Full Screen Optimizations". Check it and click apply.

Open the Nvidia Control Panel and going to 'Manage 3D Settings'. From here, select 'Program Settings' and select Final Fantasy XIV. You should see an option to select the GPU. Make sure it's set to your dedicated graphics card (it may be set to 'Auto' by default)

Delete locally saved content ('Documents' > 'My Games' folder)
When the game is running, open the task manager, click the ‘Details Tab” Find the game and right click it. Select ‘Set Priority’ options to “High”.

In order to run DirectX 9, simply disable DirectX 11 through the 'Config' section of the launcher.

Thank you once again for visiting the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums!
