Did you read the part of the thread where SE encourages mentors to invite novices to the novice network? If mentors don't invite novices then how will they get into the novice network? Wouldn't it be just as rude to message the novice before sending the invite, as that's also unsolicited and will still be unwelcome if the novice has already declined an invite. At least with the pop up the novice has the ability to auto decline, even if few know it's an option.

I don't think the only options are "mass spam raw invites" and "don't invite anyone". Just send a simple /tell saying something along the lines of "hi, would you like an invite to novice network? it's an official text channel for new players to ask questions etc". I think most people would prefer that over just receiving an invite to something a system that they don't know exists.

I don't understand the hate for invites, I much preferred them to tells. The invite is usually self explanatory, especially in the case of NN where it comes with an explanation popup, and if you don't want to participate you can just ignore it. It feels worse to ignore tell and just drags out the unwanted interaction. Plus trial accounts can't reply to tells anyway.

Same. I never understood people who lose their marbles over a popup, which you can also leave in a corner and ignore.
