    Yes it is. It's copying your data and they need to prevent you from modifying your data while it is being copied. That means rendering you unable to move or do anything, and transfering the session over to the new data center and world. Needless to say, it's a lot simpler to just log you out.
    Like stated, WoW for example has cross-realm functionality
    Yes? We have cross-world and world visit and it is fully functional. Exact same thing.

    The discussion is about cross-data center, which can mean moving your data over to Oceania (aka the other side of the world). WoW does not even support that (according to a quick google search).
    it even auto phases you into other realms if you join to a realm of another person.
    A lot of people don't like that and think it destroyed server communities, and were glad it was not a thing in FFXIV. So, there are downsides to it.

    It takes me less time to hop worlds in OSRS than in FFXIV. think about that for a moment. Even ACROSS THE WORLD.

    ? It's absolutely not. It is seamless in WoW and realms are connected, if I join another persons party from another realm it seamlessly phases me into that realm without any loading time or nothing

    Moving from Chaos to Light or vice versa is not the other side of the world. Same applies to DC inside North America.

    FFXIV doesn't have server communities outside of ERP venues, not like WoW did. FFXIV already has cross-server duty finder which fragments the communities and then there is the fact that if u want to do any content you have to go to Light (in EU).

    It's the same thing because:
    Realms = servers
    Worlds = servers

    Worlds are also connected in that they share same duty servers and allow cross-world linkshells, FC chat across worlds, etc.

    Whereas:
    Data Centers = potentially regional (across the world from eachother)
    if I join another persons party from another realm it seamlessly phases me into that realm without any loading time or nothing
    Yes, that is because it is crossing WoW's version of worlds. Not data centers.

    FFXIV can also do it that fast. The only slow part is teleporting to the aetheryte. Once you click to visit another world, it's usually instant. If you queue into a duty, you are also sort of "world visiting" and that's pretty instant too.

    There is a bit of a loading screen, for a moment, and that's really going to be their order of load operations and how soon they choose to let you move around. They did reduce that a bit by making it not have to load players first.

    While true, Data Centers are treated as separate as if they are in different regions, in terms of how they are setup. Obviously, it would help if that distinction was dropped so they could at least partially merge certain operations of them that don't involve network traffic, but right now they may as well be in a different region with how they're setup.

    It is not fast and sometimes takes upwards a minute during peak hours to swap servers.

    You also have to do this every single time if you want to do cross-server parties/content such as treasure maps instead of it just phasing everyone in the leaders server automatically and seamlessly.
