SE achieve to build a community welcoming to newcomer by forcing it which is good : good action and behaviour tend to produce other good action and behaviour. But once you've been here for a while, you realise a good part of the community is just the same as in every other mmo.
Overall, the community is still very welcoming to new players, but the whole "FFXIV is a great community" has always been misleading .
A lot of the people praising the community are just people that want to show how they are better than others, while being fundamentally toxic. If the whole "great community" has lived for so long, it's because it's carried by those people AND the ones that barely engage in content where you can see the "darker side" of the community (and this part of the community is very big).
It's not that the community has changed, it's just you reached a point where you don't only see the good sides of the community. Heck, you probably don't see them at all anymore, because you barely need any help anymore, and began to mostly interact with the PF/roaster crowd.
That said, I'll take a partially hypocritical "good" community over the openly toxic community some other mmo have any day.
And you can't ignore the elephant is the room that is the poor choices made by the dev team concerning the content done during the last 3 years as one of the reason why people are more negative today.
