Someone on reddit analysed how many main cast lines are in the game. Wuk Lamat is 3rd

Isn’t that in terms of ‘how much they speak’ and not ‘what they’re speaking about?’. Looks to me like Dawntrail literally just CTRL+F’d ‘Wol’ and replaced it with ‘Wuk Lamat’. Every expansion ‘WoL’ is mentioned around 240-260 times(except ARR where it’s mention a whole 610 times lol), then in Dawntrail ‘Wuk Lamat’ is mentioned around 260 times.
So if we’re unhappy that ‘people are all talking about her’ shouldn’t be also be unhappy at how often they talk about us over other characters? Like, I’d say this has been a problem with their writing since the start.

If the argument is ‘Wuk Lamat is too important’ or whatever then uh yeah, there’s quite a few threads about that already. We already know writers done an objectively awful job.

Except that comparison just does not work.
We are the player character and NPCs adress us. That is just absolutely normal so that our name is used very often when MSQ and such adress us or tells us to do something.
If anything you'd have to compare one named NPC to another named NPC.
And nothing comes close.

Not to mention he only counted 'Wuk Lamat' not the synonyms with that 275 times (Third Promise, Lamatyi, Vow of Resolve).
So its even higher than that.

Meanwhile the only named NPCs whose name was said more often than Wuk Lamat (again, a character that has been around for 2 patches and 1 MSQ) in the entirety of FFXIV are Alisaie (barely) and Alphinaud.
Wuk lamat was mentioned more often in the entirety of FFXIV than Thancred, Y'shtola, Lyse, Minfilia, G'raha Tia and any other NPC there is.

I think a lot of people here like being the central focus of everything (in the game, I mean). Being the figure that saves the world from a life-ending calamity over and over again. Being praised for it. The whole deal.

I, personally, think just doing that over and over and over gets extremely stale, but extremely stale is apparently what some people want. I don't think Dawntrail's story is perfect. Actually, I have some major gripes with it, too. But I'm happy they tried something different, even if it wasn't always as successful as they'd probably have liked it to be. I adore Shadowbringers, but I don't want Shadowbringers over and over and over again.

How about this thing called moderation? If she was likeable rather than incompetent/insufferable, maybe people may have liked her? I wanted to be with Erenville and Krile, rather than her. Her arc is extremely bland, we wasted time playing a contest that was rigged from the start.

From the first time she appeared, I had no interest in helping her. She's a trope I hate, but Lyse and Minfilia were also tropes I hated but none were that overbearing compared to Wuk. The entire time I wanted to get away from her. DT had solid ideas, themes of grief, rebirth, what makes someone themselves, but it all got squandered on her.

I'd rather have ShB a dozen times, at least Emet carried that expansion on his shoulders before he got downgraded into 'guys please don't unsub, look forward to the new stuff! but I want nothing to do with you btw'

THANK YOU. FOR SAYING THIS. Erenville's story was MILES better than Wuk lamat's. And Krile? The expansion that was supposed to tell us more about her, her story and her parents and grandfather? What did it tell us? Barely nothing

This is a very good point. I'm glad they tried something different even if it wasn't every players' cup of tea.

Regarding the stats at the point of this thread, it's all just a bit of fun. This sort of quantitative analysis isn't very useful as anything other than the start of a conversation. It's the old idea of "Moby Dick is about whales" - a silly conclusion one car arrive at by counting the most popular words. Some people will retroactively use this was a reason they don't like Wuk Lamat, but those people can't be helped. We shouldn't take this sort of analysis super seriously.

A word count shows how many words are spoken and in a story driven game it shows how often that character spoke in that story.
Given the story is driven by dialogue mostly and given that the most popular negative opinion is "overexposure of Wuk Lamat" I think you can't disconnect numbers and quality.

I would call it statistics. In a vacuum, they don't say much. But it's not a particularly significant detail.
The important thing here is that Dawntrail is a one-actor show where Wuk Lamat has the lead role. And she doesn't pull it off, since she's not such a superb character.

I feel like this is a very significant detail, to be honest. Comparing word count like that gives an insight on exposure of characters, so when a character that has just recently been introduced has already moved into the top 3 spots measured by most written words, it is easier to see why people cry out about how everything is so Wuk Lamat centered.
And while many people have only spoken about this in a subjective manner in the past (from what I read on the forums, at least), having an objective, measurable count like that can lend credibility to those voices where you can say that yes, purely objective, this is a statistically proven fact.
