Incidentally, I may never get the lynxes because I think they're ugly, has nothing to do with ease/difficulty.

Demonstrates my point. They have no value to you (even aesthetically). so you wont go and get them. difficulty aside it would still be a time investment to obtain them and thus a price you're not willing to pay because they have no value to you.

its basic effort vs reward.

Value is subjective but it still needs to be there. without it there's no incentive.
