Chocobo Breeding Color Broken?

I feel like I'm going crazy I've been trying to breed the "perfect" racing chocobo but the past 10+ birds have all been "gloom purple" I've been wanting to try to make the color closer to my companion chocobo but all the babies are gloom purple! T^T

I had a male all the babies were gloom purple I was like "ok cool maybe its a male dominate thing" raise one of the girls up and all her kids are gloom purple too. Its been like 10 birds now I am in shambles.

I think it's mostly RNG.
It's been a few years, my first "perfect" was some kind of reddish brown. I kinda remember I had to go back a few generations for a yellow one (it helped I kept some vouchers) and bred a new branch (merged successful with the brown one later as yellow)
