24 man PVP? I'm not sure how that would work, but that's what I'm hoping to see. LS vs LS (or free companies)

A form of this has actually already been confirmed (though I don't know if it will be at 2.0 or 2.x). I believe it was called... "Battlefields".... Or something like that, it's on the PDF, but I'm just about to leave work, so I'll look it up when I get home. Apparently it's supposed to be large-scale full alliance on alliance Free Company on Free Company combat.
All I remember it saying is that there is going to be an arena for large scale pvp battles, so it leaves a lot to the imagination.A form of this has actually already been confirmed (though I don't know if it will be at 2.0 or 2.x). One example given of the 24 man content from an interview was in a dungeon situation, you'd break off into 3 groups of 8, complete some sub-objectives, then meet back up near the end of the dungeon to tackle the final boss. That seems pretty cool. I'm just curious what kind of quantity of loot to expect with groups of this size. I think in WoW, 10 man groups typically got 2 pieces of loot while 25 man groups got 3.
You can have different raids as well. No reason to recycle content when you can offer more content instead.
Rift's 10 mans and 20 mans raids are completely different areas, with different bosses & mechanics. However they are from the same tier, so loot are as good in 10 man or 20 man in terms of stats. (But 10 man doesn't drop items for all slots/classes/specs). 20 man have more bosses and drops of final boss are usually superior (relic).
I don't like the idea of using 8 man raids as a cheap version of the 24 man. That doesn't sounds right. 10 man in rift can be as challenging if not more challenging because the room for mistake is lower and the flexibility is lower as well. While in a 20 man raid you could decide to go with 6 healers instead of 5 and lose a bit of DPS, in 10 man, if an encounter is designed to be cleared with 2 healers (due to a tight DPS check), then it's 2 healers and not 3. Cannot lose one man when you are only 10.

I remember the mention of three 8 man groups, and i actually really support the idea. 24 person charge fests can be fun at times, but its not so much interesting. Boss wih more damage and way more HP but still the same boss (maybe extra adds) seems less exciting to me than 3 groups having to split off, fight through whatever and THEN team up to down some big baddie. One example given of the 24 man content from an interview was in a dungeon situation, you'd break off into 3 groups of 8, complete some sub-objectives, then meet back up near the end of the dungeon to tackle the final boss. Not to mention its a fair way to get a higher count of non DDs running dungeons.
A boss with 24 doesn't necessarily mean more HP or more adds. If you have a wide raiding experience across different MMOs, you should know that a lot of encounters requiring 20+ players are way more sophisticated than that.
Several mechanics can be in place to force a part of the raid to perform special tasks, while another part is dedicated to damage the boss. A lot of encounters are build this way, forcing raids to assign specific roles to lot of players and if one of these players doesn't fulfill it, then it's a wipe.
It gives a high sense of responsibility and accomplishment for every single player in the raid, because you know that if you fail, you wipe your raid and that's more stressful than only dying in a tank & spank boss and causing a slight raid DPS loss because you died.
An old but good example would be Phoenix in DAoC (which Yoshi-P played for a while :d)
One phoenix, 3 energy generators providing some immunity to the Phoenix. First, one main tank group engage the boss and start damaging it. 3 small groups of players (~4 per group) had to head to each generator and disable them by using a battering ram. Before doing so, mobs patrolling around the generator have to be killed.
Then you deploy the battering ram and keep destroying the generator. During that time, more patrols spawn and have to be taken care off while 1~2 players keep using the battering ram (when you are in control of siege weaponry, you are vulnerable and cannot defend yourself).
The 3 teams needs to coordinate and take down generators around the same time. Once down, players inside battering ram can go back and help the main tank group (generator are far from the phoenix and requires players to climb a very long ladder). About 2-3 players need to remain at each generator to kill respawning patrol. If these patrols aren't killed, they will start repairing the generator, resulting in a high regen of HP of the phoenix which will be immune again.
So you have a raid of ~25 players, split in 4. One main group, 3 generator groups. All distant from each others. All fighting together in the same encounter. All having different assignments.
More example of that style can be found in recent MMOs. If having 20+ man is only more HP/dmg from the boss, then it's completely rubbish :x
